My stash, is this too many?

i see nothing wrong with your stash. if my finances allowed mine would be much larger than what i have now (modest 20+ unbuilt). as for the multiples i see no problem there either. i purchase multiples of the same kit (hawks and forts) because i love to build them.

Darwin -

You’ve got the sickness…I’ve got the cure.

I’ll take the Hasegawa Betty, the Monogram 1/32 Mustang, a couple B-52s and maybe a Blackbird or two…

No biggie, really. Stuff like this happens all the time. You get a kit you want to build. You’re afraid you’ll mess it up so you get another one just in case…then you get another one in case it becomes a collector’s item…and before you know it - BAM! There you are.

Myself - I only have one plane with multiples - my beloved Devastator - simply because I see so many I want, I can’t afford to double up or I’ll never be able to afford all the other models I’ll never have the time to build. Right now I’m up to around 320 and counting. Now if I could only get a work area together so I can start building some!

Congratulations Yardbird for sharing your life with all of those wonderful kits . It’s great to see that there are people out there willing to give up space in their homes to provide shelter for unbuilt models .They deserve a good home . Here’s to you Yardbird [#toast] From a fellow “stasher” . [^]

Hi,

My name is Mel and I’m a “modelholic”! It’s only been 5 days since I’ve bought my last model and I now have well over 900. My excuse is 40% off at Hobby Lobby and I just had to get the Tamiya M1A2 to go with the free AFV workable tracks that was given to me. I’m mainly an Aviation “nut” but already had the Revell UH-1D for the free Cobra armored seats that I had aquired. I usually buy kits on sale but can’t wait any longer for the 1/48 Italeria ACH-47. I plan to visit Andy at Hobby Town in Baton Rouge next week and buy it from him if he has it! I used the “excuse” of having so many models that it’s my “retirement” fund. I can open a Hobby Shop and not have to buy any “stock”! Attached picture of a sign a good friend and fellow 174th AHC Vet had made for my shop “Hanger No. 3”. No pictures to post of the shop and unbuilt model kits yet.

My name is Gordon and like many of you I also have too many kits. I even have factory sealed Strombeck, ITC Model Craft and Aurora kits. I never intended to be a collector but some how I bought more kits than I could build and now some of them are real collectibles. The total is somewhere way over 1,000.

I have 200 in my stash. I now know im not unique! Keep up the collecting providing room is there!

I have at 4, 3 of which are in various stages of assembly.

So…I guess that means I’ve really only got 1 in the ‘stash.’

I don’t feel so bad now!

Hi guys and thanks for all the supportive comments. I don’t feel so bad now. As far as the multiples of a given kit go, I actually do have plans for them. I want to build the various versions of the Blackbird to include the A-12, M-21, etc, which require the aft end of a YF-12 and the front end of an SR-71. Two kits to make one finished model. Add to that several different versions of the SR in old, middle, late and reactivated markings and you have quite a few. I have different decals for about twice as many F-105s as I have kits. I also sell some of the models after I get them built, so that accounts for some multiples.

My son does some modeling and my grandson, (daughter’s kid), is only a year old. Hopefully, I will corrupt him in few years.

And I was embarrassed by the 38 kits in my stash closet!

I’m showing this thread to anyone who thinks I am nuts for having too many.

Just to show what I am willing to do for a fellow modeller in need, I’ll take that Testor’s DC-130 if you need the space.

My current stash stands at 70, and I just bought my first new kit in over a year. Unless it’s something I really really need (re:want) and can afford, I don’t buy it. Since I buy to build and not to collect or sell, IMO (and my wife’s), it is just too much money to be tied up in plastic.

Darwin,

It’s only too many if you can’t get to the bench to build anymore!!!

I have close to 300 in my stash, not counting duplicates, but I have reached the point of having most of what I want. [:-^] The remaining few kits that I REALLY want are the hard to find ones, mostly older Monogram Daryl Starbird kits (i.e. the Futurista) and outrageously expensive, [:O] so my stash will grow slowly from here on out, unless you have one to “unload” [:-^] (jk)!

Brian [C):-)]

To each his own.

Personally, I realized a couple of years ago that I was buying more than I was building, so I quit buying.

I’ve got a modest stash of 20 or so kits, and about half of them are gifts, but some of the gifts date back 10 years or so.

What I really want to do is show the people who bought me those gifts how the models have turned out – which means I need to build them!

Additionally, I decided that what I really need at this stage in my modeling hobby is to build as much as I can almost straight from the box. This way, I can get a lot of exerience with the fundamentals, focusing on making good seams, good paint jobs, and good decals. I’ll still use aftermarket decals, do a little scratch-building, and maybe use a little bit of PE, but that’s about it.

When I’m most of the way through my small stash, then I’ll think about buying more kits. [ ]

Regards,

LOL…this was the first thought that went through my mind when I saw this thread, specifically my wife! I “only” have around 100 (been a while since I counted), so I can totally understand the large collection.

I too have more than I build, but sometimes, when you least expect it, there is a “deal” that you just CAN’T pass up! You HAVE to buy. I remember passing a hobby store that was having an outdoor sale and there were several kits (decent kits too!) that were less than $5.00! I was able to pick up Heller’s 1/72 AWACS for about $3.00! Of course it was missing the engines, but a note to Heller and I’m back in business.

Well, I digress. You can’t have enough kits, IMHO.

No, you have about as many as I do. And I have duplicates too. 7 x RM F-106, 9 x RM P-40B, 6 x RM P-61. I get duplicates so I can do different versions or just to do a different paint scheme. I noticed that you don’t have a 1/48 F-101, If you missed it on its last re-issue, RM has it listed for a May re-release. And I’ll probably wind up with 4 or 5 more of them.

Okay, the aircraft, I can understand; the cars, I don’t (I’m not really into cars; can you tell?). But from the sound of it, my stash is “average”: I’ve “only” got about 100.

BTW, I’ll take one of those 105G’s if you wanna get rid of one!

Wow[:O]

I’ve got a grand total of 3 in my stash and I now purposely avoid hobby lobby and vaious internet order sites so I won’t be tempted to get anymore until I finish what I have.

Yardbird,

I have to thank you! I have about 30-40 kits on my shelves, and my wife was complaining that I’m taking all the storage space, etc., I showed her your pictures and she was speechless! Then when i showed her the other people’s pics and posts, now she doesn’t think I’m as crazy as before - in fact she thinks I’m one of the more sensible ones!

Never fear. Modeling insanity grows on you and is directly proportional to the number of kits in your stash. [%-)] [banghead]

Hey…that looks like my closet! Well amost, I have over 300 plus kits but have not duplicated them. I might have 4-5 F-4 Phantom kits but they’re different type versions and scales, and I just can’t get around to building cars so there’s none in the stash. At age 53, I’m coming to the conclusion that I better get a move on and start building faster before my time runs out, so many models…so little time.
