As many of you know I am currently working on this B-17E project for Revell for display at the I-Hobby Expo.
The basis for this project is a Pacific based B-17E built in early 1942 and being depicted in late 1943, this will be shown by having the insigneas with a red surround and the center chipping away to reveal a red dot center that had been painted over.
The bomber will be on a Pacific airbase being laoded up for a mission, with an open bombay being loaded by hand with bombs, and the guns laid outside of the bomber for instalation.
The basis for this project is the 1/48 B-17F and the 1/48 Monogram B-17G. All Items are scratch built, scavenged from other kits, or as with the cockpit/ nose floor resin.
As you can see, not everything has been painted or built for the interior yet, but it is getting there.
I would like to extend my thanks to my good friend and Revell Monogram Photographer since 1986, Gerry Humbert for taking the time to photograph this project for the show.
I would also like to extend and invitaion for everyone to come to the I-Hobby Expo Show in Rosemont Illinois October 21st and 22nd, and to visit us at the Revell Mongram Booth.
Cool! I wish I hadn’t closed up my B-17F- I probably could have used your pics as references, judging by your description of the project! By the way, aren’t you working on a B-24 too? It’d be cool to see some pics of that!
I have but one word to say regarding this build … MAGNIFICENT!!! The detailing is exquisite, you really need the transparent fuselage half to showcase this beauty! Thanks for sharing and keep the pics coming!
Talk about a “teaser”, Vintage! She’s looking like a winner already. I can tell you’ve put a lot of work into her, and look forward to more. There’s nothing like an early B-17!
Thanks for all of the kind comments everyone, I really appeciate it
This project has been my breather project, a kinda take it easy build, nothing hard, nothing special just a simple build.
Oh and the Guns are from the True Details B-17G nose update set. I used the True Details Cockpit set and nose resin sets for this kit. By the way…they are absolute crap, I did not enjoy useing them at all, dont get my wrong, the detail is amazing but the sizes of the parts and the fit, after heavy modification, just is not really worth the time and effort.
I am also working on a 1/48 B-17D, and I shure will be useing the lessons from this build to finish the D. My hope is that the D and E will share the same dio by december (the E being finished fot the show of course)
Excellent, while I applaude the level of detail you have constructed I wonder how much will be visible when completed. Looks like you could use a clear side panel.
Hey VA, having the TD Nose & cockpit sets myself I know what you mean by heavy modifications. I put that project up until I am better skilled with such problems[B)] The rear bulkhead to floor pan is where my major gripe’s at. Did you have to trim the floor? I feel it’s a hair too long. Did you have that prob?
**Swanny-**The Bombay, Cockpit, Radio Compartment and most of the waist Gunners section will actually be quite visable through the openings, but when I put this model on display at the show, there will be a book showing the photoprogression of the model so people can flip through it and still see what is inside that cant be sen anylonger.
**Hippy_Ed-**Yes I have to say that is my biggest gripe also, especially since I Opened my bombay and that had to be heavly modifyed to work.
Thanks to Matt, I had picked up some Paragon sets such as the Open Bomb bay, crew access doors & flaps. The Bombbay really was fun to work with.
How’d you over come the prob with the floor pan & rear bh? This is comin’ along really nice. I like the idea of the photo book along with the model. Grand idea there[^]
Well I sanded the floor down until it matched up to where the Bulk Head was supposed to go, then I simply used the Revell Bulk head and will be adding my own pices to it becuase as you know the TD one had so much extra resin on it that it would be a pain to use.
Thanks VA, I kinda thought I needed to take it down but, with my skill level on resin, I didn’t want to chance it. The detail of the TD sets is great tho & is a bugger to get to fit in right. I’ve sanded quite a bit down in order to get the fuselage to come together in the test fitting.
