Battle of Britain 85th anniversary 2025-2026

Nicely done Hurricane Ebergerud!

Nice job! Some of the modern Airfix can be difficult. Glad things worked out.

One note about squadron codes. The ā€œSquadronā€ letters should be as positioned on the Port side, but they’re reversed on the Starboard side. That is, the squadron codes should be close to the tail. Maybe the ground crew was dyslexic. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Excellent Eric! Looks great.

I put the decals on the way they appeared in the instructions. I don’t understand a thing about the messages sent by the markings - except for the national insignias. (Although I easily forget the colors on the RAF and French insignias.)
Thanks for the kind words.

I did a bit more research and found that you are correct. 501 Sqd. did indeed have their squadron codes as you’ve depicted. It was standard practice to have them as I described, but not all squadron followed the standard. I apologise for my mistake. Always do research before declaring something incorrect.
A brief thread explaining the codes.

Looks good, Ed. Nice 1/72 scale Stuka!

Thanks, it’s nice to see the last of my Model Master RLM 70 & 71 still kicking. Have a bunch of touch up to do as well.

Trying something different with the this one and going to mask and spray the canopy separately Masking is going to have to be by scratch since I dont think there are any mask sets for this old Airfix kit.

You’re welcome! Speaking of paint, glad the RLM colors are still good. I’ve had several bottle of old Model Master paint dry up and become unusable. I wonder if there is a way to extend its shelf life? Only extends to certain enamels.

Gary

I put a drop or two of their thinner into the jar each use and that seems to help. Funny thing is that I don’t remember this being an issue back in the day. They must have changed something along the way.

I’m making progress, but I’m not liking the look of the canopy so much. I got lazy and just freehand painted it.

We are our own worst critic. As a casual observer I think your canopy is fine. In fact, it’s an excellent freehand paint job. Are you planning on entering a contest with it? If so, you might redo it. Or not. I guess what I’m trying to say is know your audience. If it’s only family and friends, they will be amazed at your work. No one else sees what we see in the build (except judges, maybe).
I would be proud to display the model as is, and you should too!

I think that this applies to us all at some point. I know it hits very close to home for me and is probably part of the reason I fail to finish so many started kits. I’m not sure why I sometimes stress over small mistakes on a kit to the point of paralysis, leaving it unfinished, when I have so many other kits available to improve upon.

@68GT, your Stuka looks great as is, I’m hoping mine turns out half that well.

For me, model building is an exercise in fun! It keeps me busy, allows me to work with my hands, (hands being the few remaining appendages still fully functioning) exercises my brain, and brings a clear head and an escape from life stresses. The resultant product brings me a sense of satisfaction in a job well done, flaws and all. I’m proud of everything I build. I don’t build for competitive reasons or public adulation (there’s nothing wrong with that if that’s what drives you) I build for me. If it turns out great, then great! If it’s substandard to me, then I’ve learned from the experience and apply those lessons to the next build. In the end, no model I build will affect life on Earth as we know it. My advice: finish those models you’re stressing over and move on. Own them and be proud! Very few people have what it takes to do what we do. You have a unique talent and can always build another, better model. And have fun dang it!

Good looking Stuka! And I agree with @mrb865 and @Frozin. We can be our own worst critics. We’re always trying to improve our work, and thus we tend to over-extend ourselves by creating work that we don’t need. I’m doing it on the Corsairs I’m building. Adding struts, a vacuform canopy and revising the 20mm cannons on the Revell. Work that’s not necessary.
So relax! It’s nothing that will cause a national crisis. Just do the best you can and don’t worry about it. At my age, it’s the best lesson I can give.

Gary

Well… I think I have chosen what I want to enter for this GB so could you add me to the list please @GreySnake01 ?
It’ll be Eduards 1/48th Bf-109E-4 and I’ll be doing Black 14(3rd a/c down).
Definitely looking forward to this!

Happy Modeling,
Mike
