1/144 Scale Lake LA-250 Renegade by R&R Modelers

Greetings All!

My name is Russ, of R&R Modelers, again. Like I have said before, we are not a business, just a friendship and collaboration between two modelers, Ron and I, to make realistic small scale aircraft model displays, for our own enjoyment. This thread shows the 1/144 Scale Lake LA-250 Renegade, a six-seat amphibious utility aircraft produced in the United States since 1982. The aircraft is powered by a 250 hp (186 kW) Lycoming IO-540-C4B5 engine and has a maximum speed of 160 mph (258 km/h) and a range of 1,036 miles (1,668 km).

The model was designed using AutoCad, and plans found on-line.

As usual, I started by importing the plans, scaling them to the proper size, and tracing the cross-sections.

I then moved the sections to the correct location, and using the Loft and Extrude commands created solid sections, that I then joined using the Union command. The shape of the windshield section had to be ad-libbed.

Next I created the tail in a similar fashion, and cut the rudder out of it.

This was followed by the horizontal stabilizers and elevators…

…Followed by the wings, flaps and ailerons.

Following this, I added the engine housing, using the plans, pictures and a bit of guessing.

Next, I did the gear and pontoons. I also prepared to cut out the glass features…

… Then cut them out, creating separate pieces.

The image below shows the way the wings and gear are to be attached and the rotated “open” cockpit doors.

Continuing from my initial post, I next made an interior, cut out of the bottom.

Next I consolidated the pieces on the engine housing and made an attachment point for it, as I did the pontoons.

After this, I turned to the interior, first creating an IP and detailing it using pictures.

I also made two different seats of decals for the model…

…And at Ron’s request, made a mold for bashing windows out of clear plastic, because the 3-D clear plastic is somewhat opaque.

I haven’t received my order for the Renegade yet, but Ron has, and was kind enough to send a picture of the printed parts.

I finally received my Renegade model today, and I am one happy camper! It really came out nice! Below are pictures of the model, as I received it from C2D (after unpacking it of course).

… and a close-up of the clear parts, including the cabin glass and spinning prop. I am quite surprised by the clarity of the clear plastic. In the past the “clear” plastic wasn’t very clear. These definitely are.

Hi Guys!

I decided to put the main parts of the Renegaded together, as seen in the pictures below.

Next, I will clean it and spray it with Future, but it may be a while before I get to it.

This is a great model ! Would you be interested in sharing your 3D model. I have dozens of accurate aircraft models, but I do not have a lake amphibian.

That just goes to show that you never know GM, because I actually have a response for both Maverick and Space Ranger.

As for plans… I do not know if they are still available or not; I found them on-line. I still have the JPG files though and would be happy to send them to you if you e-mail me at rdutnell@ou.edu.

I also have stl files of the model at 1/144 scale, which I would be happy to share with you if you want to 3D print it. The stl files could be scaled up to 1/72 scale when printing.

3rd person interested - I was in love with the Renegade as a kid and as recently as 3 months ago was doing a search on Scalemates to see if anyone ever modeled one. And to top it off, my 14yo has started learning 3D printing, so…methinks he will have an assignment from the guy paying the electric bill… :slight_smile:
