I too left the hobby for a few years after building cars exclusively and got rid of everything. Took it up again a couple of years ago and suddenly have around 200 kits now… aircraft, armor, cars, a few boats, diorama buildings and a bunch of accessories.
Not buying much anymore since I basically have what I want but I’m still waiting for new releases! At this point I’d rather trade than buy but that turns out to be much harder than buying.
This thread just got me thinking. The 50 some odd kits I have in storage I honestly do not plan on building. I had considered selling on ebay yet I just don’t have the time for that endeavor. Then I recalled reading about sending kits and materials to our Service men and women serving abroad. I would love to do this yet I am unsure where to get information on doing this. Does anyone out there have information on how to go about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No I don’t but that is a fantastic idea. I suspect many of us have kits that may not be built for quite some time and that would be a great way to put them to current use.
Mine’s about 80-90 out of which 25-30 are 1/72 and planning on getting rid of them soon. After a long hiatus, I started back in 2009 and got those. Shortly after I realized that other than the big guys i.e Gato Class Sub, Wolf Pack, B-52, etc 1/72 is not for me.
Got about 125. Probably 30 of those are at some stage of construction, and wind up on and off the bench from time to time. Many of the rest were impulse buys that I don’t really have any desire to build now-like when you go to the hobby shop (whats that?) to buy a kit and they don’t have it, so you spot another and say “well, they didn’t have that kit, but this one’s O.K.” I stopped impulse buying a few years ago, and have only added 5 or 6 kits to the stash in the last couple of years.
I’ve neglected updating my inventory but last count was 982! Sick puppy, I know. However, that is over 40 years if “collecting”! Roughly buying two models a month. I have a buddy who has more than me so when retirement rolls around shortly expect to see Tracy’s and Melgyver’s Hobby Shop opening up! We will need beer money! Now if only I can live another decade and my eyesight, hand dexterity, and meager funds hold out maybe I can build a hundred or so. You have to have a goal in life! Besides beer drinking of course!
Pretty much you told my story here. Many times I need a jar of paint and the trip to the HS cost me $50-$60. I’m going to have to take some action too.
I would say my stash is at about 70ish or so, and climbing once again. Several years back, when the stash exceeded 200, I sold off those kits I was “collecting” and kept those I planned on building. After which I had about 50, and the stash is growing with kits I intend to build …eventually. Most sit in storage because they are serious projects I lack time to tackle at the moment. My stash spans aircraft, armor and most recently ships. Armor is confined to LVTs and AAVs in 72, 48 and 35th scales, and as a new kit comes out I add it to the collection. Ships are limited to 700 scale Texas’s, I am awaiting a release of the SSN to complete the line-up. Most of my aircraft are 72 scale and revolve around building each type flown by the 111th FIS 147th FIG, from Jenny to Predator with several aircraft in 144 scale. Aside from a collection of 144 and 100 scale BUFFs I prefer prop-driven aircraft.
I really need to find white space to carve more building time out of, as I attempt, mostly without success, only buy new kits as a kit moves from stash to hobby desk. A losing battle with self.
I am afraid to count because with the slow way I build I will never get through them all and will have to stop buying them. Any way here is a picture of it.
Therein lays the problem for all of us. It takes far less time to buy a kit as it does to build it. I imagine that most of us with a stash will never properly dent it unless we can reverse the order. If I never again buy a kit, I probably one day could finish it, but it will take a very long time.
When we bought our house in 1978 I only had 10 unbuilt kits. I joined the local IPMS chapter in 1980 and suddenly the kits began to give birth. Even though I left the club in 1998, the number still multiplied. Now there are 500 to 530 kits residing in one little room where I still have to build.[proplr][2cnts][8-|][*-)][8-)]
130-135-ish. 4 more added that I didn’t need from the vendor room at the IPMS Region 1 NoreastCon this weekend. The stash has been growing since 1983, so I’ll resign myself to a relatively slow growth rate as opposed to admitting that this nonsense has taken over my life. But DAMMMM, I love plastic…
Thanks for the compliment! It took me years before I had the space and the willingness to get around to making a room like this. Now the room is far more efficient than I will ever be.
The last time I counted, just over 300 kits, 25 detail sets and 25 sets of decals. However, I know I’ve bought more kits since then and Scalefest and Squadron’s Open House is this weekend so I know the stash will be growing.
