Taking a cue from another thread, I was curious to see how old everybody here was. What seems to be the age groups that most modelers tend to fall into?

Great poll.

Now can we get one for how old my brain thinks I am? Then another on how old my wife says I act.

a common reason why many people in my age bracket (15-17) don’t scale model is because of time constraints/money constraints. I actually got my first model December '24 but didn’t actually finish until fairly recently - due to school taking top priority. Most of my modeling tools are household items (most of paints are also acrylic artists paints that are left over from 2 years ago) and this is because I am a broke high school student who spends all of her money on random antiques relating to the military in some fashion.

I would disagree, I think the interest just isn’t there or people don’t even know about the hobby. Sure, someone might be interested enough to buy a model kit, but the attention to follow through is the hard part :joy: (I literally only know 1 or 2 friends who’ve ever built models)

But the time-consuming and expensive nature of it can definitely make people less interested
I told my one of my friends about railroad/train modeling, he said it looked cool but looked too difficult/expensive/time-consuming. Also many ppl interested in military vehicles usually just play the videogames and not build the models :<
I found out about modeling via youtube :sob:

Fun idea. Thanks for putting it together @WhatIfRebel!

Okay yeah model trains are hella expensive because you have to buy trains, tracks, and a lot of other equipment. A single model kit and some glue and paint should set you back around $50, and then you can use the glue and paint on other kits in the future, saving cost.

One thing I’ve heard from other people, groups, clubs, etc. is that young kids/teens want “instant gratification”. They want something that doesn’t require a lot of skill or work to put together. They want something that goes together quick.

I think that’s a trend with a lot of people, and maybe an issue larger than age. You have the snap togethers for the new builders and the littles, but anyone that gets into the hobby will have the patience to build kits. I think its a mix of different reasons why younger people aren’t interested in older hobbies, and while one reason (lack of patience) might be a part of the problem, you can’t just stick it and cover the whole issue

A lot of my friends will put time and effort into hobbies, model making just isn’t one of them

Facts, I’m 45, mentally I’m 25ish, my wife says mentally I’m 5. She’s obviously wrong, she’s such a poopie head.

most of my friends don’t have any real hobbies :'[
I’ve NEVER met a person irl who loved building scale models…

For me I didn’t enjoy this until my 40s. It’s more of a relaxing hobby, I had much more exiting hobby’s before this, street bmx, body building, guns, drinking, gamer, guitar. Now I build models, bbq/smoke/grill/cook, still play the axe, and still lift but not body build, just slowed down.

haha in MY youth i enjoyed riveting hobbies like…collecting stamps

I have a stamp collection too, havent sorted through it too much tho

That’s a bummer. Have you been able to find a modeling club near you? IIRC you were going to look for one?

Approaching 60. The word “retirement” is starting to creep into my vocabulary. But I still feel half my actual age.

It is :frowning: ! yeah but with my summer almost entirely filled out I might not be able to make it this year. but lets see :')

I have been into anything “Scale” since I was 7 y/o (58 y/o now lol). Like all of us Life came first and now I have the time to seriously devote time to scale modeling and dioramas.

Well good luck finding someone IRL! I feel bad for you. I don’t currently know anyone near me who models, but that has more to do with geography than anything. I’ve at least met some people, and had friends who did when I was a kid.

Although, you sounds so busy you might not really notice for a while anyway! Dang, girl you got a lot going on! haha
