I was unaware of Walmart’s extensive model kit offerings until a kit that I was looking for showed that WM had it. I then searched for wamart model kits. There catalog says more than 100 kit! This is for online purchase.
A warning- they are not all** kits. an occasional die cast shows up.
I do know Walmart sells kits, I was quite surprised when I was looking for hobby shops in the US. However, when I travelled to Miami in 2016, I went to a Walmart and there were none.
I wasn’t aware of on-line models through Walmart. A couple in our nearby area carries some(mostly AMT/MPC car kits)but the local Walmart doesn’t carry any kits.
For scale modelers, Walmart is a step below HobbyLobby and Michael’s when we rank sources. As others have noted, not every store carries models in-store, and then, the selection is relatively limited. Sure, you can order online, but probably not worth it for the selection. Though that selection is good when looking for kits for a kid whom you want to encourage in the hobby. Also, it can be a good source for basic supplies when you need something right away.
I agree with the Baron about Walmart and modeling. Their art/craft section is fair for supplies like wooden plaques for bases, Mod-Poge, white glue etc.
My local Walmart has never carried model kits in their store. And if they do, why should I go there when I can view a bigger and better selection of kits from my local hobby store which is only 2-3 miles from me.
I remember when they sold the 21st Century Toys 1/32 kits of the Stuka, Macchi, Corsair, and Me-109…while not the most detailed accurate kits, the decals were stellar!
What seems to be problem with online ordering. I order from Amazon, Squadron, Kitlinx and other online sources. Sure, you have to know what you want, but I find it easy, with all the forums.
I agree missileman, if you have to order online no reason not to got to Walmart if they have what you are looking for. Site to store pickup is free or ship to home for reasonable price. One tip: if you find a kit, put the description in the search engine. Walmart uses a lot of second party stores and there will be some that sell the same kit cheaper than others.
On a side not Target offers model kits online as well.
See, if you can’t drive and you shop online, there are better sources, dedicated scale modeling sources, with a much better selection, than Walmart. Walmart is good in the same way that the arts & craft stores are-in a pinch, for some basic supplies or basic kits, it’s good in a pinch, but only if you can get to the store. If you’re ordering online, you’re better off with places like Sprue Brothers, MegaHobby, Squadron, and similar scale modeling suppliers. Unless Walmart has cheaper shipping at the time, than a dedicated scale modeling supplier.
