Probably should have asked this in paint page, but here goes.
Looking for a source for hull red for a Liberty ship build. Since MM went away, only thing I’ve run across is Vallejo 71.039, out of the Allied set.
Any other brands (prefer acrylic), or possibly a mix ratio for Tamiya. Their hull red is ok for IJN, but not US.

Edit…on the way, along with their thinner, just incase Testors acrylic thinner isn’t compatible.
I don’t believe that the two types work together. One of the many “joys” of acrylics… incompatible formulas and thinners.
Wouldn’t surprise me. I try to stick with maker’s recommendation… I have enough problems already.
But can mix a few drops in a cup and see what happens.
Well the thing is that Liberty ships were not Navy ships and were built in various civilian yards all over the country.
Their paint colors didn’t really follow any uniform standard, topside Gray being the prime example. 5-O is pretty close usually, but any kind of red oxide on the bottom works.
Also the Trumpeter top bottom split is a little high up the sides.
And despite the comic pages, the decks on civilian Libertys are the same color as the verticals.

Thanks GM. That’s what I’ve gleaned from an old thread from somewhere that one of the crew of the O’Brien chimed in on. Also said the color split was at the 10’ line, and no boot. He added the top of the stack and upper mast were black.
Going to prime anyway as I had to sand the seam between upper and lower hulls.
Got several bottles of MM 5-O.
I used True North anti-fouling paint of my stalled Titanic buiild. Nice paint and lots of naval paint - maybe take a look
Thanks. Took a look, and will keep in mind for future, but not big on enamels, shot too much of it as a painter in the auto body industry.

Included in the Vallejo Nuclear Submarine paint set (71.611) is the Model Air Fire Red (71.084), slightly oranger than rusty primer red. I also like Reaper MSP 9242 Carrot Top Red.
Reaper’s Rust Brown (9072) is a bit redder, Auburn Shadow (9241) is a bit browner
They are absoluty not compatable. That’s my only beef I have with Mission. Thin with their thinner and clean the AB with watter. Anything else will break up the paint and you’ll have paint chips and specks to clog your brush. I have found that Vallejo thinner works ok. I love Mission other than that. It’s just not compatable with other acrylics.

Testors used to have a British Crimson that was a good color for seagoing bottoms, but I have not seen it in ages.
For freshwater hulls I usually use red oxide primer, which is widely available.
Yes, that was in their Model Master II line of colors. It’s now OOP.
Another one I like is the Ace Hardware spraycan version of actual Rustoleum primer. It’s got more red, less Tuscan brown than rustoleum.

Some of the lines used green, blue, even red decks–if that was Company practice. As was whether is was all decks or only weather decks or the like.
Often, the only thing consistent about merchies is their inconsistency.
