US CARRIER AVIATION GROUP BUILD 2013

I have made a lot of progress on the cobra.

Pics are up in about 5 minutes. As the left door will be closed, you can’t see the damage to the left at all.

I’ll hide the lower part of the instrument panel behind a folded map, so all the ugly spots will be covered up by something [;)]

I think it turned out rather well. At least as long as you can`t see the damage, what will be the case.

I had a similar idea about building many of the different variants of the Skyraider and last year I invested a small fortune on buying lot’s of 1/72 scale kits and aftermarket goodies ;

I sanded down some wooden dowel to make a couple of underwing pods , one for a Revell AD-5 to build as an AD-5N bird

A Fujimi A-1H kitbashed to a AD-4N ,

Both those builds are going to be Korean War birds

There’s also a resin Magna Models Skyraider Target Tug which I want to build as a AD-4W with another of those Falcon vacu-form belly radomes .

I made a list of different versions I can build ;

There’s some decal swapping from different kits and aftermarket decals for other versions and since I made the list , I have picked up two more Hasegawa Skyraider kits . There’s also a Hobbycraft French Skyraider that’s partially built up on the shelf as well . So lot’s to do , especially finishing off the Korean War Skyraiders .

John .

Oh, god, so many Skyraiders…

I want as many Thunderbolts in 1/48 and 1/32 in my stash… (the “Jug” is my favourite plane of all time)

Clemens

cool build list

I cut my Skyraiders down,only 4 of the Monogram -5 based kits, 5 Hasegawa, 2 Hobbycraft, 2 Fujimi, and 7 Airfix/MPC/Heller kits

I cut down to around 10 or 11 total, with the Airfix moldings providing upgrades/spares for some of the others

I got a great deal on even more Scooters, and had a dozen sent to me as a surprise gift from a friend,so, I worked it out for my Squadron collection to just use a Scooter whenever it would fit for them

I have the Eagle Strike, Aeromaster and Microscale sheets, plus the kit decals from various releases,

and after all of that,I still need to get certain “Skyraider only” units made up from the spares box

I am months behind, but, I am supposed to be turning over enough Skyraider references to get a small decal company to make a sheet up of all the units that no one ever made Skyraider decals for in 1/72,so, there may be hope for VA-16, VF-54, VA-176’s last cruise on Saratoga, etc

when he releases that,I will be sure to post on here so that other Naval fans can help me buy out his stock

oh, and that caption is wrong in that Warbird Tech book, they weren’t in Korea, they were in the Atlantic fleet at that time, according to the USN’s own periodic reports

and believe me, no one risked a court martial by gun-decking those reports to the fleet listing “what we have” and “how many in total of those we have”,BuNos would have given that away, right off

Wow… Already 6 pages and still about 2 weeks until the start of this…

I’m impressed.

Clemens

Thanks for the additional info on the AD-5N and it not participating in the Korean conflict [Y]

I really like your A-4 Skyhawk fleet build that would look awesome .

Along with the Skyraider the S2F tracker is also my favourite Navy plane .

I had trouble deciding between the Tracker and Skyraider for this group Build [:|]

I settled on a Skyraider thinking it would get me motivated to finishing some of the already started builds .

Hopefully I may be able to squeeze in a E-1B tracer after the Skyraider …Hopefully !

John .

that is a cool E-1 back there in the stack

I am making do with the Falcon Vac conversion for my E-1, and I only have 2 more Stoofs and a Viking for my ASW tasking

I am very much itching for the start date, here

when I cut my collection down, I chose USN/USMC Naval aviation as my focus,so, this is almost like a “home build” to me now

I have a Scooter, a Phantom and a Hellcat to clear off the bench by the time this starts

Rex

If there’s any GB here that would attract your attention, Tarn, I’d have to think it would be this one!

I really want to jump in on this GB, but I have to wrap up other commitments (and soon!) before I can add to my schedule. But… lurking in the stash are a F-14D, A-4E, SBD-4 and a AV-8B II+, all 1/32 and most with goodies.

I would be happy if you join this, Dre. But finish your projects first. I love the Harrier btw…

Clemens

I deleted the original post I had placed here as it was suppose to be in the “Longest Day” group Build .

My apologies for the error .

John

Oooop’s ;

I posted in the wrong Group Build …

Sorry !

Hi Clemens,

Put me down for a 1/72 Hasegawa Buffalo. This GB looks good.

Cheers

Tony

You’re in, Tony!

Welcome to the Carrier GB!

No problem at all, John! Happened to me as well… Please just remove the post, so it wont take up half a page. (I was a little bit confused when I saw your post [;)])

Clemens

Never having entered a group build before, I will need guidance if admitted. While I’m not a huge builder of Navy birds, I do have a couple in the stash, and this has prompted me to get designs on one that I’ve had waiting for a dozen years or more.

I also had committed that this year would be my year to start on the Tamiya F-14A original release that I bought 30 years ago and have been afraid to start for fear of my skills not being adequate. I just know there is no way that particular project will get done by 12/31.

In looking to avoid a ‘me too’, I pulled out my Hasegawa Skywarrior. My concern is that my chosen livery appears to be a ground pounder flying out of Rota, Spain (probably shadowing Rooski’s in the Med). I also have a pic of a sister bird on the Tarmac at NAS Alameda.

Would that bird qualify? If not, maybe a trip to the LHS is in order, as they had an EKA a year or more ago and I’ve got the options to do either a Roosevelt or Kittyhawk skinned tanker.

Worst case I’ve got a RoG F-18 that could be pressed into service.

Let me know and I’ll give you my decision.

And just to whet the appetite, here is one that while it breaks the rule about “not having the fuse glued together” , definitely qualifies:

RA-5C Vigilante, RVAH-11, Uss Independence, Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club edition.

1/72 Trumpeter Kit

As long as you build it with USN or USMC markings, this bird does qualify…

So, Welcome to the GB, MAgather!

I’ll put you in the entry list.

Perfect. I’m in with a 1/72 Hasegawa EA-3B Skywarrior. Largest plane to ever be carrier qualified.

Best, Marty

I’m looking forward to all your models, guys!

Can’t wait to start on my wildcat!!!

Cheers, Clemens

Thinking hard about the F-14D and a bunch of AM goodies…
