The Voodoo that you doodoo(what?)Monogram 1/48 F-101

Next up I will tackle the old Monogram F-101 Voodoo.I was really surprised when the instructions said to join the fuselage halves in step 2 after you put in the fuel vent.Never had one that did that before!

Sweet. I think this is a really good kit. I have the Revell rebox and plan on rescribing it and using an Eduard PE set. The cockpit must fit from the bottom huh? Hope the intake assembly goes smooth for you…

A very nice classic kit, I’ll be looking forward to this build.

I feel like a Blazing Saddles reference belongs here…[:P]

… Candygram for Mongo.

Lol!yes the cockpit installs from the underside!

To improve the fit I separated the intake ducts. There were a few other areas that needed attention as well. I did a build log on it when I built one, it’s here:

Thanks for the link!I will consult it if I run into a problem.

Watching with great interest. I too have this kit in the stash with the Canadian markings and will build it up as a CF-101. They have one here at the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada. I have some pics - just need to get them uploaded.

Ive had the pleasure of building this kit before. Excellent details.

I think this kit was from one of the first production runs as I do not believe any filler will be necessary! The fit of the fuselage halves is remarkable.

Very cool! I think the VooDoo is my favorite ‘Century Series’ fighter. I’ve got one of those kits somewhere in the stash.

The intake/airduct system may have a hard to fill seam when assembled.Might have to use 2 part epoxy to fill the seam if it remains visible after it is installed in the lower wing. We shall see!

Just curious, how well do you feel the Ross glue works on styrene?

Mike

I only use it on canopies. For general assembly I use CA.

The epoxy eliminated the inner seam and I glued the starboard upper wing section to the lower.I like how Monogram designed the wings so as to prevent any seams on the leading edge.

Lol!Classic Mel Brooks film!

That’s the exact scene I was thinking of!

Got the wing unit together and the fit was quite good.Had to add a small amount of filler in a few places but no big deal.

Hi Philo! So when you said the epoxy eliminated the inner seam, how did you do that? I see you painted both the upper and lower halves of the intake trunks and then what? You used epoxy instead of any other type of glue? Did the epoxy “squoosh” out and eliminate the seam? Did you have to do any sanding? I’m going to guess not because then that would have eliminated your paint job along the seam area. After you glued the intake halves together, did you have to go back and do any extra touch-up work on the paint job?

I’ve got the Voodoo in my stash as well and would love to be able to eliminate or at least greatly reduce the seam. Intake seams are right up there canopy framing when it comes to things I hate to paint.

PS. For the record, Howard Johnson is right! A Blazing Saddles/Mel Brooks quote is appropriate and welcome anytime. It’s twue! It’s twue!
