The Korean War GB - 75th Anniversary

This is the 75th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, to which this group build is dedicated. It’s largely forgotten today, and thus the misnomer “The Forgotten War”, but it is only forgotten by those who didn’t live in those times. To those who lived and fought in those years, the Korean War is as relevant today as any of today’s headlines.

As such, this group build is dedicated to Msgt. John K. Stewart, my uncle, who served 30 years in the Marine Corps (1947 to 1977) and was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. He’s seen here at age 80, still able to fit in his dress blues. Semper Fi, Uncle Johnny.

Rules for this Group Build

- The GB will run 6 months, from June 20th, 2025 to December 31, 2025.

I’m keeping this short as I’m getting old and forgetful. I may extend the end date depending upon participation, but anything started can be finished up after the end date. There doesn’t seem to be a GB badge to indicate a completion, but I’ll post your builds upon finishing as normal.

- To enter, all you have to do is start building your choice of subject and post it.

There will be no list of people who MIGHT build something, but only those who start a build. Keeps the list tidy, and prevents embarrassment for those who, due to circumstances, may not have time to do a kit.

- Builds should be no more than 10% started. Preferably start from scratch.

The Korean War was a conflict between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea) in which at least 2.5 million persons lost their lives. The war reached international proportions in June 1950 when North Korea, supplied and advised by the Soviet Union, invaded the South. The United Nations, with the United States as the principal participant, joined the war on the side of the South Koreans, and the People’s Republic of China came to North Korea’s aid. After more than a million combat casualties had been suffered on both sides, the fighting ended in July 1953 with Korea still divided into two hostile states. Negotiations in 1954 produced no further agreement, and the front line has been accepted ever since as the de facto boundary between North and South Korea.

Awesome! Although my years of service were after your Uncle, Semper Fi!
Awesome introductory post also!

I am going to start on my old 1/72 F7F Tigercat tonight. I’m washing the resin pieces now, and then I’m going to start working on the plastic.
It will be a machine from VMF(N)-513 “The Flying Nightmares”.
When I was still active in the Marines, I was fortunate enough to watch VMFA-513 drop some ordnance from their AV-8B’s. Impressed the heck out of a much younger me! Sad that the squadron has been decommissioned. Anyways…

My Uncle was the one who got me into model making. He brought me a few aircraft models, probably built by someone else. I don’t remember much about them, except for the B-17 which had a workable bomb bay. Lindberg?

That Tigercat will be a fantastic build, though it’s and old kit. Looks like you’ve got enough parts to completely rebuild it!

Choosing a subject to build is a hard choice. I have several kits that would fit the bill, but I decided on the Monogram F-80 Shooting Star. It was already in the que (a bit further down), but it will make a fine addition to the GB.

After that, the Monogram Mig-15, Trumpeter F9F-2, Academy F4U-4B are valid choices, along with a Testors P-51D Mustang.

F-80 is a solid choice. I was just digging through my Korean War reference books and found a couple good ones on the F-80. Truly, an unsung hero with dozens of great paint schemes. I’m looking forward to it.

I’m so tempted to join but I have a bunch of group builds I’ve committed to.
I have:
1/48 F4U-4B with decals for both Jesse Brown and Tom Hudner…hummmm
Also have a 1/48 t-33, 1/48 F9F-2 Panther on the way and a Mig 15…
Make it 1 yr and maybe.

@keavdog My suggestion? Start this group build and delay the others. After all, you have a year to finish those. I’m going to keep the 6 months. But, it’s up to you!

That’s a great kit!

That’s a great kit, probably the best of the F-86s out there according to reviews.

Here’s my ESCI F-86 Sabre. Not as refined, but it’s finished.

Did some work on the pit today. Not much to report, just waiting for some parts to dry. Will post something once more complete.

Hopefully I will get the wheels back on and join this GB. Here is an F-86E I did using the Academy kit and the wing from the Revell F-86D. Robbie Risner’s markings.

That look good, John. Kit-bashing at its finest! Hope you can join too. You always turn out excellent models.

Some progress. I’m about finished with the cockpit (just some touch-ups left) and trying to decide how much lead weight to place in the nose. I’ll try to cram as much as I can so it won’t tail sit.

Guess I can go on the list now. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Looking good Gary! I will hopefully have some photographable progress tomorrow. Despite the aftermarket parts, there are still some shortcomings that need to be addressed. It is just an open hole where the wing mounted oil coolers are located. I dug through my stuff until I found something I can use. I also opened up the exhaust vent and separated the flaps. The engine exhaust pipes will have to be replaced too.
I’m glad I’m finally tackling this project, as I just found out a company called Fly, is putting out a series of tigercats in 1/72. I would probably take the easy way out and buy the new kit! With a new tigercat kit out, the aftermarket might spool up some necessary items like wheel/tires, photoetch etc. however.

Thanks! You’re on the list.

I’ve given up on acquiring new model kits. There’s always a new, better kit out there. I’d rather just cut down on the stash, building models as best I can. I realized that I probably won’t be able to do this much longer. I spent most of the afternoon on the floor searching for small parts, only to drop them again. My manual dexterity is not what it used to be. So correcting kit errors, or adding details is becoming a thing of the past. Now, I’m just happy to finish!

Sorry for the complaining.

June 25th, 1950 - The North Koreans invade South Korea and the war begins.
Indy Neidell present an overview of the invasion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLWG6OEFWNs

I have one question: Did the invasion occur on June 25th or June 24th in the USA due to the International Dateline?
