This is the Airfix 1/72 Sunderland III kit with a scratch built radar array for the Canadian GB. The kit itself was a bit of a bear as is to be expected with Airfix. It took quite awhile to sand and scrap all the flash off and to tone down the overdone rivets. Then came the seam filling and sanding… etc. etc. I passed on adding any interior detail except for the addition of some floors and bulkheads to keep you from being able to see all those little round windows through the cockpit. Speaking of the little round windows, 80% of them all had sink hole marks so I had to spend a considerable amount of time filing them down and sanding the marks out and then a quick dip in the future but they turned out great IMHO. I still intend to add some weathering and exhaust stains but I ran out of some supplies so that will have to wait a bit. I used several different brands of paint including a couple cans of white… it’s a big model with 20" wing span and it takes several coats to get it to look white. Decals are from the kit and worked well. Anyway, enough yapping, on with the pics.
AACCK! I have been “locked” out of photobucket.[:O] My companies webwatcher for some reason has blocked my photobucket account and now I can’t see any pics that have the [IMG] tags to photobucket. Yet I can still see my sig as it is linked to tagged to photobucket, go figure. I guess I gotta go home to see the pics. eergh![:(!]
ditto, except it’s my school that blocks it.[:(!][banghead]
Wow, looks really neat! Given the kit you started with, it’s thumbs up. Great stuff!
Very nicely done. The Sunderland is a unique looking plane that I don’t see too often. Very nice subject matter.
Impressive job, Dave! Always did like those big flying boats.
Dave, you did a marvelous job with that old Airfix kit.
You should be proud.

William: Yes it did take awhile to complete, I think about 6 months with breaks here and there to work on some smaller projects.
This Company, www.whiteensignmodels.com, better known for their ships, are now making PE sets for some of the older Airfix kits including the Sunderland. Due soon are Lancaster, Halifax and Stirling. They can also be used on other kits such as the Revell re-issue Halifax.
Nice Build! You did an excellent job on the canopies. |
