OK, here is my review. I just threw 25 bucks down the drain. Oh yeah, an encyclopedia, information, how to build and improve my skills. Oh yeah, what a rip off. Great pictrues, great models mind you done by the masters. However, practicial tips? Give me a break. An example, they are telling me how to do an instrument panel. I don’t know what in the hell they did. I will tell you, there was drybrushing involved and there was obviously some other things that resulted in what appeared to be a real instrument panel shrunk down to 1:48 scale. There ain’t a way in earth and and Gods creation I could replicate it. Folks, when someone wants to learn how to do something, don’t tell us you did it and show us the pictures, show us how to do it in detail. All the book is is a bit of WWII aviation history with close-ups of model building. 25 bucks of stuff I see on here all day long. Oh yeah, I can do that, right. I am so disgusted right now. When I learn all the techniques I need to know, by sorting through all the misinformation, I am going to write a book on modeling. I gurantee you, if you read it, you will replicate my builds. That is what the community is looking for and that is not what is out there. Another case in point, anybody see the Trumpeteer hornet build in FSM this month? Oh yeah, I learned a lot there. I learned how to put a qtip on the end of a tiny plane and paint it. That is about what I learned. Pretty pictures but other than that, a waste of time. I’m outta here. Just sit down and stop assuming we have all been doing this all our lives. Stop assuming we will hit on the internet site that gives the scoop without the crap. Just stop assuming so much and tell us how to do things so we can enhance our skills and move forward. I gurantee you, if you ask 10 people on this board how to do a sludge wash or how to do panel lines, you will get ten responses and maybe 1 of 10 has a beautiful model. The other nine has a lower wing with crap all over it because no matter what you do, after the wash dries, it don’t come off folks. That is just an example. Man am I teed!!!
Look man, if you want to vent, do it somewhere else! I happen to have bought the book too, and I found a lot of value to it. That is my personal opinion. But you have no right to rant and rave on this board. If you don’t like it, then why are you here?

I’m sorry you wasted 25.00, but on the other hand I am glad it was you and not me.[:D] This site is here to help us and get information, mostly helpful, on tips and techniques, and REFRENCES. man am I teed off to think someone else has to be so mean on here. That is not what this site is about joseph whatever, If you enjoyed the book that is all you really needed to say. how about giving your opinion on the book instead of bashing someone who has. why don’t you get a life and don’t make me pull all the redneck stops out!

What nsclcctl wrote is in part true for most of the modeling books. The best one, as far as I am concerned, is the simplest one “Modeling and Displaying Military Aircraft” (or something like that ) by Boyer. The ones from England (the Osprey collection) are especially useless as well as difficult to follow because of the layouts.
I have learned that as I build and make mistakes and discover techniques on my own, the picutures in those books have informed me of what I might want to try myself. “How to” is not their forte. Event the fine “Detailing model aircraft” series by one of the premier modelers (Ashley) is way too complex and detailed for me.
The same could criticism could be made of the annual FMS publication. You don’t learn much about “how” but it is still neat to see “what.”

[:D] I was glad to hear the rant. You expressed what I have so frequently felt. It has cost me alot more than 25 bucks. I’m a slow learner. Most of the good information I have received has been on this or other forums. It’s great to know that so many are willing to help and I would like to help if by doing nothing more than listening to a rant.

I LOVE the rant!!! If you can vent here and feel good about yourself - GO FOR IT!!! I have done similar things with “how To” books, but keep it as a reference because as you get better, you will realize there is good information in there you can use. If Box Stock doesn’t like it - TOUGH!! Just remember that modeling is supposed to be FUN. Just take the info and apply it where you can and enjoy the hobby. Good luck with your modeling and keep posting!!!

Hey don’t be ashamed to rant like that again. I feel that way sometimes about washes that others have told me about and didn’t work. But it is experience. Continue modeling.

thanks for the heads up re the squadron book[;)]; i have had a similar experience with those osprey books - good colour profiles, but all you see is a bunch of plastic bits in one frame and a prize winner finished in the next[B)][:0][:(!]
my only reservation comes from when you mentioned asking a question, getting 10 replies with only 1 guy who can actually do what he says. i think this is a little unfair.
people on this forum have been more helpful than i could possibly have wanted, answering questions i’m sure have been asked lots of times before.
regarding the standard of their work, from what i’ve seen on this particular forum, the guys who talk the talk can certainly walk the walk!![:p][:)]
later this week i’m about to follow the instructions of both swanny (panel lines…so watch this space) and djmodels99 (washes on my panther G), so i’ll be putting what they say to the test.
if you have followed the instructions of someone here and it hasn’t worked, then let us - and them - hear about it. i firmly believe all the feedback you get will be constructive and supportive, with the possible exception of josephkukavica (who is that guy?!).

I just want to apologize for what I said. The thing is I really liked the book, and took what you said personally, which in hindsight is a dumb thing to do. I hope there are no hard feelings.

Many thanks for the info on the book. I had seen it in the Squadron catalog and thought about buying it. Then I looked at all the other books that I have and decided that with them and this Forum, I didn’t need no more ‘Stinkin’ Books!

I just stole this link off another post. This my firiends, this is insrtuction and this is worth every moment that you read it. Great job in telling us how to do something. This guy, who ever it is, should write a book. This is a gorgeous model and I belive I can now do a cockpit just like it.
I think this…ALL you are *“seasoned modelers”…*And at least a few of “Masters Modelers”. Sooooo…Its hard to find a new book that will tell you like a …sludge for that or scribe or whatever…
BUT, thank goodness, I was new for the modeling. It was OUTSTANDING book. But now I knew that now…BTW… Ive got a Osprey book called 'Basic Aviation Modeling" by Jerry Scutts. Its a good book…
Well, well, well. Since we are “ranting” (a very good release) and “defending” our not-so-favorite and favorite books on modelling.
I would like to say that “On Plastic Wings - A Complete Guide To Plastic Aircraft Modelling” by Francois Verlinden is a great guide IMHO.
Although some passages are a little hard to comprehend due to translation. Still, the diagrams and pictures are a great help.
While it is true that the last 25 or so pages are a gallery of models built by various modellers. They are there to show what can be achieved using the tecniques described in the book. [tup] [tup]
I would recommend this volume to anyone.
