Ships of the German Flag GB 2020

OK Kapitäns, it’s time for the Ships of the German Flag GB!

By now you who have participated in the past ships GB’s you know the rules. For those of you who have not participated…well here they are…very simple.

1 The GB starts August 1st, 2020 and runs indefinitely (that means as long as it takes)

2 The participant has two years to enter a build, or any number of builds into the GB. The entrants will be closed on August 1st, 2022 (if we’re all still alive by then) and start when you feel like it.

3 ANY ship, surface, subsurface, merchant, anything that served under the German flag, any German flag, any era is welcome. For example; the USCG Eagle is welcome since it was seized as a war prize.

See, simple, just build a German ship, however long as it takes. Enter and start when you want.

These flags are for GB completion award purposes only. The Kriegsmarine flag and its swastika is historical and the use of it does not indorse any political or ideological belief or movement.

Forgive me mein herr, but my Germen is rusty. I haven’t had any need of it since high school. Everytime I was tansferred pverseas, I went to Asia, notably South East Asia or Okinawa.

What does “zur See” mean?

Literal: at sea.

Practical: of the Navy.

Yes, thank you GM [:)]

Hey Steve I’m in with Revell U-boat VII C in 1/144.

You got it Nick, I’ll put you down.

Sign me up Steve with a 1/144 Revell Type IIB U Boat.

You got it PJ, love to have you aboard Kapitän.

Still need to order my kit for the build. It will probably be next week when the order is placed since I need to make an order with SprueBrothers anyway.

No problem GS, once you sign up you have forever to complete it.

I’ve noticed several items are out of stock. Had I foreseen the manufacturing, shipping and other factors associated with the Covid I would have stocked up.

I figured shortage of items would happen and stocked up supplies before the effects of Covid impacted everything. I ordered some things from Russia this morning and I’m interested to see how long that will take.

I haven’t built a ship or sub in 45 years and I have nothing in the stash, but I could come up with something. At least by 2022! [:D]

No problem Tomcat, just let me know what you decide.

Let’s get this party started. I’m posting my obligatory sprue shots first. I haven’t photographed all the extra 3D gear I’ve purchased over the years but I’ll get that done tomorrow along with a shot of the reference materials I’ll be using. I’m tempted to over gun this puppy although I’ve not found any references so far about the Kriegsmarine doing this with their boats, but what the heck! I’ll also be mixing and matching decals just for grins and because I want to.

I’m building the Revell 1/72 Schnellboot S-100 with Flak 38. I have both the Griffon PE set although not the top of the line one as well as the Eduard PE set. I’ll probably not use the ArtWok decking as it doesn‘t give any depth to the model deck. I have a boatload of 3D parts that cost a pretty penny to say the least and way over the cost of the model.

So without further ado, let’s do this thing,

Steve

Awsome!

Look at all the AM, you’re so bad Steve. Same as me, I can’t seem to do anything OOB anymore

Maybe because I have so many kits that I can spend my money on AM nowadays. Becides, the wife doesn’t get as frazzeled what some PE comes in Vs a kit. PE means I’m working on a kit, a new kit is just an addition to the stash.

So here goes.

This kit cost about $ 300 ten years ago. Kind of a rare Cabernet on the shelf thing.

As for GB’s I get aboard on, I usually join only when there’s a kit that fits, as opposed to buying a new one.

Box art. Combrig is a good resin kit company Their catalogue is very extensive and their kits are pretty flawless.

Someone has been living in here since this kit has been out in the barn for the last 8 years. But the castings are intact.

Instructions are intact.

A little PE and bags of resin parts.

Oh my…

Bill

Oh that look like serious fun GM, no joking.

Nice GM, I am really interested in your build. Is that hull banana shaped as bad as it seems to look in the photo?

Freetime annouced they got the Combrig Scharnhorst in stock in 1/700 scale. I am tempted to get it. I had a lot of fun building the Combrig Kansas.
