Revell 1/72 Fokker D VII Build log

Yea I know I got one other model to finish, and yet another to even really start. But I was browsing the LHS today and saw this one for a cheap price. Sort of a diversion from the other things, I picked it up as a knock off quick build sorta thing before I tackle the tough 1/72 Dragon Hobbies Hellcat.

Anyhow off to the build log!!!

Box art.

I figured this would be a cheap model with little to it. I was presently surprised! Good number of parts, nice instruction book, and look at that bizzare decal!? The moulding could have been better lots of flashing to clean up right off the bat. In fact there was a string of stretched plastic inside the bag [:P]

You will also notice some weird mark on the right half of the wing. Looks like rust?

Close up of the decal sheet. There is actually a color chart in the instructions on how to paint that… good grief!

Part count. Not a real clear picture but trust me there is some flashing to be dealt with.

There being washed now and might get time to prime them tonight. Till then!

Oh wow, I’ve never done a bi-plane before, this will be a interesting build to watch.

Toshi

Very Cool. Man, I built that kit back when I was in high school. That oughta be fun. Nice thing about building a D VII, no guide wires.

Thanks guys, I did get it primed last night but due to a tooth going off I dident get any thing else done. I did research paint schemes and the ‘lozenge’ seemed to be the choice of the moment for these planes.

I am off to look see what that was all about? Just seems a little bizzare, but then again I never understood the zig zag patterns on ships…

Here is a bit of fun with lozenge camouflage.

That’s awsome stuff!

Ready for base colors

The white center top of the wing. If you look closely you will see I missed one bay on the port side. Had to re-mask and fix it.

Prepairing to apply the decal to the bottom of the top wing. Oddly enough the decal is bigger than the wing. You will see this illustrated in the next few pictures.

There you can clearly see the extra decal material hanging off the edges. I will let it set up overnight after applying microset and microsol.

The red detailing ended up taking many coats. That is after 3 coats!

2 more coats later!

And this is what impatience will get you. Let that base coat dry completely before taping… sigh.

That’s it for today I obviously have some fixing left to do…

Awe, oh well, just keep busy until tomorrow and then you can work on the Fokker’s paint scheme. Still, a very good job!

Toshi

Off to a good start, I’d always kick myself when I let my impatience get the best of me when it came to letting paint dry fully.

It’s coming right along. Don’t fret the mistakes, we all make them. Looking forward to the big reveal on this one.

BK

Nice job with those big decals, they can be a real pain!

Groot

Yes the decals were a tough job espically the top wing which is in two pieces hard to get them to line up.

I have most of the base colors down and the decals. Not a lot to add whats been posted before other than I trimmed up the decals with a sharp blade and some sanding sticks. I might get the chance to paint some of that lozenge tonight.

Nice recovery UM. Your doing a knock out job on that DVII.

Not too much to add. My bad tooth is distracting me pretty badly. I see the dentist tomorrow so maybe get some relief. In the meantime I have selected the colors and begun with the lozenge painting.

Pretty much finished up painting the lozenge patterns. Not perfect but passible. Cowling and radiator painted and shaded ready for whenever. The ‘engine’ painted and detailed. Its just one piece. That’s it for now more to follow soon!

Ah man, beautiful job! How did you paint the top wings?

Toshi

There pretty much just blue, I used blue angel blue left over from the F-18 that I had. There are some pics on page 1.

Got the bad teeth extracted today, two of them, so maybe in a day or two I can get really going again. Right now not so much.

Tell me you’re not painting every single one of those SOBs by hand?! Well done. =]

Yea the photos don’t really give a good sense of scale but there of different sizes the biggest of which is about the size of a plump grain of rice.
