Repaint attempt on the Mig-29

The new shop heater is working well and the minimum ambiant outside temp. is 30° in order to be able to paint, any lower and it would take too long to be able to shoot paint.
I wiped the first Mig-29 down with part of a clean old t-shirt soaked with rubbing alcohol because the wife unit read on an I.P.M.S. website there is an issue with the heavy duty Dawn detergent having an addative that leaves a residue behind creating a non-adherence barrier for paint (Makes glasses all shiney).
The canopy and gun port masking needed a little touch-up as well.
I just had my hair cut really short to preclude premature bald spots via mechanical process in case this paint procedure doesn’t work out.
Tommorrow… I shoot paint.

   It has begun.....

Sprayed the exhaust metal color and the mouse grey on the underside of one of the stabililaters…
Tomorrow I’ll mask off the areas I just painted and start with the pale blue camo base color.

First color, light blue lacquer shot at 16 psi.
Sprayed as wet as I could get it, no fisheyeing.

Masked and shot the second color.
One more color and trim pieces to go.
I bought some Tamiya tape to try it out and it’s working out well…I’ll be gritting my teeth removing it though.

Masked the Mig-29 ALL day…and shot the dark blue at 20-23 psi. In 20 mins.
I used regular masking tape I cut to 1/16" on a pane of glass to do the hard edge, cut to fit Tamiya tape to

fill in, and Vallejo latex mask to cover just about the entire upper surfaces.

Pulled tape and there are minor easily fixed spots of overspray … but, overall I like the way it looks.
There are more colors yet, like anti-glare panel, dielectric panels, and accent panels.
And DECALS, lots and lots of the itty bitty, tiny, leetle steenken decals (use appropriate “Rosanna Anna Danna” voiceover)

Looks great! Those blues are awesome.

Man the MIG-29 is just a wicked beast of a bird. I love it.

Did all the required touch-ups and tomorrow I’ll paint the dielectric panels and anti-glare panel.
I had to wait for a day that was the minimum temperature of 30° to heat the shop to 60° without taking all day.

Next is all the decals…

I used the Tamiya tape to mask with for the touch-up cycle, I like that it isn’t so sticky that it pulls off paint…but it is NOT a persistent adhesive and does not stay adhered very long past the original application.
I still highly recommend it in cases where you have any doubts about pulling up paint while masking.

Masking and airbrushing the dielectric panels, anti-glare panel.
I have a few more to go but, after today I’ll be on another weather hold.

Paint is all on, the next thing will be the gloss, decals, painting the landing gear & wheel assemblies and getting it on the landing gear.
The temps are dropping and I came in just under the wire.
I’ll just have to wait for it to get warm again.

Those colors are great! Nice job masking too — good and sharp.

All glossed up and pretty.
I can start the million decal adventure tomorrow.

Bravo! That looks pretty badass bud!

It looks really good.

Decals are on and I brush painted the red antennae under the nose and the wing tip lights silver, once that dries I’ll paint the clear green and red over them.
I found the antenna on the spine I snapped of early on (yay me!).
You can see one of the panavises I use a lot when applying decals, I can keep the decal surface purpledincular to local vertical and the microsol doesn’t run off the decal.

Just about have this one wrapped up, or are you going to do a bunch of weathering too?

I need one of those vises so I can get my decal surfaces…

What an excellent turn of phrase! Even better than “perpendicular”! :joy:

Lol…I worked with a lot of characters and picked up some eccentric and colorful metaphoric descriptors.

I might do a small amount of weathering but nothing like an aircraft stored outdoors for years though.

The tires LOOK black but, they are just very dark grey and I’ll add the black tread wear & black wash on the hubs and stone guards a little later.
