Pics of my Panzer III L...Still in Progress....

Ok these are pics of my Panzer III L. I am still working on the weathering, but would like some feedback on anything I can do to fix it up. I must say that I am going for a more Artistic view on this rather then an overly weathered and filthy one. I have a slew of Stowage that is going to be attached to the rear (Jerry Cans, Crates, Ammo Boxes, etc…) The camera also is also creating a bit of sheen on the hull, believe me, it is not shiny. Please any crtitism is welcomed…it only makes us better…enjoy.

P.S. renarts and Shermanfreak…I will be getting you on MSN later for some tips with ethe Pastels again…

Looking real good Moses, are those the Fruil (sp. ?) tracks?

They are actually ModelKasten, a pain in neck to build. These tracks require you to put the track teeth in along with the pegs [:(!]. But it was fun building them.

hey there, its looking great!!! don’t stop now…i’ve never tried pastels so unable to advise on that

-one thing i’ve always wondered about was the wash technique when it comes to desert vehicles >>>> shouldn’t it be a light colored wash because sand and dust would accumulate the most in crevices and such? I guess then one would have to dry brush with a dark color, even metallic to even this out. Has anyone ever tried this???

Your Panzer III is coming on nicely. Now that I see yours, I will box mine back up and put it up next to the ones that haven’t been started.

Excellent build Rob ! Very clean workmanship, the wash is very subtle and will be even more subdued after the pastels are used. Can hardly wait until we see your pastel work.

P.S. Did I mention the rivets … LOL

Moses,
Well I have to say that I have never seen such a waste of time, materials and money. There are times that a model should just be set on fire and melted back to the earth from which it sprang. That’s my opinion of my Japanese 97. Your Panzer on the other hand is absolutley beautiful. If you left it now as is, I would still be amazed and content for having seen it. I like that fresh, just been kissed factory look. But if you weather it and do the pastel work who am I to mess with perfection?

Love the track sag, the extra effort you put into it was well worth it. Just gives the whole thing a look of weight and mass. Says “I weigh alot and will crush puny Shermans”

I like the darker wash. In my opinion, to emphasise the lines and detail with a darker wash adds to the overall aesthetic. It accentuates the detail and visualy exaggerates it, giving it a crisper look. Something that I think is needed and helps with the overall presentation when working in scales like 1/32,1/35, or 1/72. Any drybrushing you add will tone down what the wash has picked up making for an easy balance that will even out in the end and still make a nice effect and a distinguished model.

The presentation base is nice too, makes it look like a cared for piece of art and completes it. In my own stuff I always put some sort of ground detail. I like doing it and it just sort of rounds the whole thing off. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a diorama but just some dirt, pavement, road whatever to give it a little extra.

The wheels look very nice and after our MSN session I am going to make up a wheel mask like yours. That makes for some crisp lines.

The photography looks a little yellow. Could be my monitor but I don’t think so since The forward detail is a different tone than the side and back shots. A little more light should fix that. Not much though just enough to brighten it a bit and not make it so warm. You have a nice illustration light though so everything stands out and nothing is washed out. (Don’t use a camera mounted flash as it will create hot spots and wash away any detail in the photo). Grab some white poster board and use it to bounce some extra light onto the model from the sides and down low. This will fill in some of the dark areas under the sponsons and throw some illustrative illumination on the tracks and wheels.

All in all my opinions are just that, mine. Its sort of like trying to figure out how to make a better tree, why mess with perfection?

I look forward to seeing the finished project and only being further amazed.

Can you do something about that anaconda though…?[:p]

Mike

Superb! I really like your painting.

very good!!
you’re way ahead of my jagdpanzer for sure, I just finnished the tracks today and need to put them on the beast itself. I also camoed up my lower hull as well, I just need to tackle the upper portion by attaching it to the lower hull? but they don’t line up so unfortunatelly it’ll take some creative juice flowing on my part to get it together?

Thanks guys, I still have some more weathering to do, as well as get the rear stowage strung up on the back of the model.

renarts, I have tred many methods of painting the road. Everything from painting it by hand with a brush to a sharpie. But I now only paint them by first airbrushing a mixture of Tamiya Flat Black and Tamiya Nato Black over the whole wheel. Then I use a circle template to paint the base coat. if any overspray occurs, i touch up using the very thinned airbrush muxture and let it move along the edges for a crisper paint job. I then blend a mixture of oils to weather the wheels.

I hope to get the finished pics up by the middle of next week.

Cheers

Rob

Incredible is all I can say. As someone who is constantly befuddled by armor, I am impressed. It is a bit hard to tell in the pics but, my only suggestion would be this: to do a bit of drybrushing with white in a few spots, especially near the top, to add a sun faded look.

You may have already acheived this look and I just can’t tell by the photos.

Wow. again I’m impressed Moses! I’ve got the modelkasten tracks (3/4 complete) for my jagdpanzer. I figured they would look really good and I hope they come out as good as yours. Along with the rest of the kit.

That’s it, I’m cleaning off my desk so I can actually work on a model instead of just buying them![:D]

Eric

Looking forward to the finished pics Erush. I love ModelKasten, but with these type of early tracks, it is a real tediuos process to build. Like I said earlier, the teeth are molded seperate and need to be glued and sanded. I can never do more then 6 or 7 sections at a time, before I get a headache[;)].

Very nice work!
I love the subtle washes on your wheels…very effective. Your tank is coming along just fine,
Regards, Dan

Again Moses, awesome job. Did you freepaint the Balkan Cross? I think you’ve inspired me to to rethink my paint scheme, I was going to paint it Panzergrey.

Thanks tigerman nd boybuddho, actually the cross is airbrushed using a mask from Eduard. I normally airbrush all my markings if I can.

better than I can do that’s for sure

M1abrams, I seriouly doubt that. Anybody is capable of what I have done with this Panzer thus far. I do not use any real fancy techniques when painting, and my building has alot to be desired. I think it all comes down to how well you can handle an airbrush, using the right color shades, weathering, and of course practice.

Rob

Pretty trick, Moses.

Reminds me of some way-cool CGI work some Japanese guy did, I think he said it’s a Panzer III J.

Anyhoo, I like the look of your oil job on the wheels.

Fade to Black…

Moses,
What color is that PZK III. In one picture it looks like a “dark yellow” (like german yellow) and the another picture it looks more like a “desert yellow”. It looks great in either color I’m just curious which picture is closer to the color.

Looks great !
