I have been eagerly awaiting delivery of this, and just was so impressed with what a cool thing this was that I wanted to share it with ya’s.
Man! I couldn’t believe how heavy the box was! The mailman had to drive his truck over to the house! I cleaned it up a little, and WD40’d it a bit after taking a wire brush to it to scrape some of the loose rust and cobwebs off of it. Here’s some photos!
This sucker’s BIG!!
Here it is next to a 1/35 Tamiya Pz IV model…
I couldn’t believe that after putting the WD40 on it, the track pin actually could be worked out!
Me and my new Favorite Thing! [;)]
Cool, huh? Now I have to find a spot for it…Man, this baby is BIG! And H E A V Y !
Very nice doog, looks like it’s in very good condition considering! The fact you could get the track pin out is a nice bonus. Now the real question of course is does it scale out properly at 40 cm? Inquiring minds want to know… [(-D]
Is the track 40cm or 38cm? If it was 38cm it would probably be from either a Ausf.D or Ausf.E Panzer IV. If it is 40cm it would probably be from a Ausf.F Ausf.G Ausf.H or Ausf.J Panzer IV.
Interesting thing is that the Ausf.D and Ausf.E were also used on the eastern front.
Well, I measured its length—that’s how you do it right?–and it seems to be in the neighborhood of a 38 cm track–bummer; I wish it was a late model! Still, it’s cool as hell nonetheless!
Man, I wish I knew what kind of tank it came from!!
Hmmmmm…that’s odd—I didn’t think the “notched” horns were on the early 36cm tracks…I thought that was a late war feature found only on the 40cm type…The 36cm tracks were replaced fairly early in the war with the wider 40cm…
Nope after 41 the 36cm tracks were replaced by the 38cm track which were then replaced sometime before Kursk with the 40cm tracks. You missed the 38cm tracks Manstein.[:P]
BTW Doog that is definitely a Panzer IV track shoe they had both a hollow and solid horn design and were used exclusively with the Panzer III Ausf.G and Panzer IV Ausf. D&E.
Oh shoot!!! You’re right–I skipped a whole size!!! I have egg on my face…lol. Still, I thought the “notched” horn was a late war feature on the “light” 40cm?
No, that’s the old Wegman’s piano factory here in my town, and right outside my front door! It’s abandoned now, although my band used to practice in there and record our albums there. A developer has since purchased it and is turning it into high-end condominiums! [sigh] There goes the peace and quiet of my neighborhood!
No, actually, I got it from a guy named Bruce–his eBay ID is “corvetteload”.
Evbegij had the Tiger and Panther tracks for sale, and a whole slew of things from WWII that he’d dug up. I’m not sure where Bruce got his stuff from, but he had a 2nd one for sale, and I think “Wing_nut” here on the forums bought the 2nd one.
There was another offered from Prague, Cz Rep. for sale. It didn’t sell for $66.000—it had a reserve. The seller was named “little_tadpool”. Here’s the link for it:
Oh that is just too cool! What are you going to do with it? It might come in handy for those uncooperative builds. When you reach your limit, reach for the track and BASH! Down goes another under the mighty panzer track!
