PACIFIC CARRIER AVIATION GROUP BUILD

Found out that this is proving to be quite a test in patience and skills though as this model definately wasn’t meant to be built as a bird with the wheels and flaps up. Here’s where I’m at so far today…

Here’s a wing to show one of the flaps up, the outboard flaps on the wings after the “bend” were the easiest…

Then there’s the matter of the flaps directly near the fuselage, before the “bend” if you will…
First off, on the starboard side of the aircraft, one of the flaps has a square missing, I believe this is the foothold or what have you for pilots, I read in some review that the earlier corsairs did not have this, I can’t remember when they added it but I looked at some photos of the birdcage corsairs and they did not have this.

So with my limited supply of sheet styrene I cut and sanded out a piece to fit the top half of the flap, and glued it in…

Unfortunately though my sheet styrene is too thick to be able to do that to both sides but not thick enough to cover up the hole on the bottom half…

So I filled in the hole with putty, it’s deeper than I wanted it to be, but at least there is a bottom for the putty to sort of adhere to.

This is what both flaps look like, I needed to remove the tabs on the end, and the thing hanging off the side on the smaller flap.

In addition, where the flaps are now going to be, theres a bunch of empty holes that you can see where the tabs were inserted,

When I dry fitted the flaps on, you could see the holes, so I had to fill them with putty…

Here is one side of the flaps dry fitted, still have a lot of work left ahead on just the flaps, but the good news is after this there isn’t to much to be done construction wise.

Looking good Josiah. If (and it’s a big if) I get in on this GB, it’ll be with Tamiya’s F4U-1D. A little different than yours, but it’s still good to see your progress. Gives me some idea of what I might be up against.

Hey, just as an FYI, that cut-out in the flap is a step, but you did the right thing filling it in on your build. Here’s what one of my reference books says:

The cut out step in the inner flap section was only on the right side, and it was found on late F4U-1Ds and all F4U-4s. It was not a production standard on F4U-1s or F4U-1As, however, because the flaps were interchangeable, some of these earlier Corsairs may have had them fitted as replacements.

Just thought you might find that interesting.

Anyway, keep up the good work!

Cheers,

-O

Josiah, nice work, and interesting question about the flaps.

From what I can tell from this manual, the flaps would be up during flight and combat:

jgeratic: That’s a nice page to reference. I’m always looking for things like that.

ygmodeler4: I remember hearing recently how the bomb window on the underside of the Corsair was eventually omitted on the D variants. They were left or painted over on the -1 and -1As but I think they were left off the Ds. I would check that out. =]

The first Seafire XV’s were on route to the Pacific theater just as the war ended, but would be operational there post war.

Both Xtradecal and Model Alliance have a single XV on their respective Seafire themed decal sets. Freightdog set looks to have several options:

Hey Josiah, Wow, You are doing terrific. It appears to me that you are tackling all the alterations quite nicely. I regret that I was distracted from the forum for a bit but, it looks like you got the answers you were looking for and have handled them appropriately. Bvallot brought up the point of the lower fuselage window. From my references concerning the 1A the window was indeed installed but, was often simply painted over. Yet, I would consult references on your particular aircraft to verify that.

Thanks for the comments guys,

O, thanks for confirming that for me, glad I remembered correctly.

Jack, thanks for that checklist, helps a lot.

Bvallot, I remember reading that somewhere recently as well, thanks for confirming it Joe, I figured that was the case and was hoping as well as I didn’t try to be neat with the glue inside the fuselage.

Thanks again for checking it out guys

You are doing some great work indeed, Josiah!

I’m sorry to disappoint you, but yes, it is WW2 only…

Thanks Clemens…

Well here’s where my Corsair stands until I paint it which will probably be a couple weeks when it warms up.

Hi SchattenSpartan, I’d like to join up if I can. Unfortunately, I can’t offer much variety as I was planning to do the Revell 1:49 Corsair F4U-4. [;)] Thanks!

The more the merrier! I’m talking about group build members and F4U’s both of course!

You’re on the list, Raven! Welcome aboard!

Some of you might have wondered why there is no badge for this GB yet. That’s because I can’t come up with an idea I really like. Do you have any wishes on how you want it to look (a particular plane for example)? Last year’s GB had a badge with a Corsair and one with a Wildcat, so I’ll go with a Hellcat for the American badge and a Zero for the Japanese one if nobody here wants anything different.

Hellcat and zero sound fine to me

Too easy; I can adjust to WWII. I’ll get back with my kit choice soon.

Cheers, Clemens.

I would like to join the group build. Last go-around I made up some 1/700 Wildcats for a model of USS Lexington in February, 1942.

Now, I need some SBD Douglas Dauntlesses for a 1/700 scale USS Enterprise at Midway. With your approval, I’d like to construct both VS-6 and VB-6, using Trumpeter’s 1/700 scale planes, and Starfighter Decals markings for the two squadrons.

Thank you.

Welcome aboard, Checkmate! How many Dauntlesses are you going to build?

Thanks, Clemens.

I’m not sure how many come in the box.

According to the after-action reports I found on the internet, both VS-6 and VB-6 had 18 planes in each squadron, plus the CEAG’s aircraft–Lt. Cmdr. C. Wade McClusky. It was McClusky, leading the scout bombers, who located Kido Butai for the dive bombing attacks.

I’m working on Enterprise for the Hollywood Group Build, and left the hanger deck open, so I’ll need 4-6 planes to fill up the space there, plus some for the flight deck.

However, many I have, I’ll just split them up between VS-6 and VB-6.

I’ll get around to posting some photos of the box, parts and the after-market decal sheet I’m going to use, later today.

Thanks again. I enjoyed the first carrier group build you hosted Looking forward to this one, too.

Hi Clemens, I’ll change my build rfom a 1/72 F6F-3 to a 1/72 Eduard F6F-5and use Superscale 72-735 to make an aircraft from VF-17 ‘Jolly Rogers’ in 1945.

Cheers
