…not to mention the sheet metal rain guard on the mantlet, the extended rain guard for the driver’s periscope and, interestingly, the five metal strips for protecting the engine vents. I figure I’ll need about 20 of these kits to model all the variations I want including turrets with and without spare track links.

A nice Panter A would certainly be nice in addition to these gems. Perhaps, Caveperson, SkyBow will bless us with one next year. How do you like the way their Tiger goes together, quite the kit, isn’t it?
Id rather have a proper Late Panther or proper early Panther, there#8217;s no mention of the late idlers being an option

The Tamiya Panther G is a LATE vehicle with the late idler and without Zimmerit. You still get a couple of options seen on late Panther G tanks, but it still will be a late Panther G.
Skybow is doing an EARLY Panther G with early idler wheels and the Zimmerit coating. Also, with a slightly earlier exhaust version. The Skybow tank will be a tank produced in March/April 44, I think. The Tamiya Panther is from September / October 44.

Well you Dont get the late idler in Tamiyas 1/35th LATE Panther G kit and they dont look very LATE in the photos ive seen
and since Skybow have brought a LATE and EARLY Tiger out i think they will do the same with there Panthers
now since there were some very LATE panthers produced with thicker hull roofs and sliding hatches the Tamiya LATE cant be made into one of them
Hhm…SORRY, but we speak about the 1/48 scale Panther G and this kits HAS the late version idler wheel! Simply go to HLJ site and look at the picture. The Panther definetly has the late idler wheel.
I guess, that you’ve mixed something up! I just checked the instruction sheet from the 1/35 scale Tamiya Panther G late and again looked at the HLJ site - BOTH the Tamiya 1/35 scale Panther G late and the upcoming 1/48 Panther G late DO HAVE the correct late version idler wheel.
I’m not sure, but I think, that you’ve mixed up the late and early idler wheels…
They are hard to find in the states too. I had to get mine from Track48 in Canada. greatmodels.com is usually a terrific source for kits, but they never got a delivery (as far as I know – I canceled my order and got my copy from Track48, so greatmodels may have gotten them in the meantime).
I’ve never seen one in a shop here! The guy that runs an LHS ordered a few late Tigers for himself and a few buddies from a buddy of his in Taiwan, so I got to take a gander of those. They are indeed very nice! He offered to let me have one for $20, but I passed it up.
They did get them in…eventually. The two I had on pre-order finally arrived towards the end of August, long after I’d got some others from a place in Hong Kong.
How odd, the LHSs in Toronto had them relatively quickly and we are usually not in the avant-garde of the modelling world, being such a small market. But since the shop owners know Garfield (Track48), his lobbying efforts really paid off. I purchased my kit from Track48 (and picked up the Hauler PE too) for not much more than they are selling in Hong Kong. However, once SkyBow releases their early Panther G and Jagdpanther with zimmerit there should be more demand for their product. I know one die-hard 1/35 scaler who bought a SkyBow Tiger as he is a Tiger fanatic. So even if you are dedicated to 1/35, try one of these kits just for the sheer fun of it.
you should notice the idlers on both the early and late 1/48th Panthers are the same size
in there 1/35th Panthers the idlers were all the same size and style (early, steel wheel, late and Jagdpanther)
in the Dragon late Panther kit and Jagdpanther kits, there is a correct idler wheel
if you have the book, Germany’s Panther Tank, the quest for combat supremacy - Thomas L. Jentz
look on page 90 for the dates when changes were made
on page 96 it says under self cleaning idler wheel was
“Due to poor self cleaning, mud and ice build up inside the original idler wheel. Starting in October 1944, an inproved self cleaning, larger diameter idler wheel was mounted”
the Flammenvernichter was introdused in October 1944
so now you know the differences
is there no options in the kit for the poison gas detectors? they started in October 1944
i will still wait for the Skybow kit
The Tamiya 1/48th Tiger kit is £19.99 ($35.07 USD)
The Skybow 1/48th Tiger 1 kit is £11.99 ($21.03 USD)
