OOB Blue Angel A-4 Gasp!

I’ve started an actual model with instructions and I feel like I’m cheating. This is too easy! It’s the Monogram Promodeler Blue Angel A-4. The only thing I’m trying to decide is if I want quit being a chickens#*t and use my airbrush for the first time, since it’s one color I’ll be shooting. Decisions… Has anyone else built this and what did you use for the wing leading edge, paint or foil?
Eddie

I took the easy way out on mine. I used the Model Master Aerosol Blue Angel Blue paint and Bare Metal Foil on the wing leading edge, intake edges, etc.

Great kit, I’ve have built several with fleet bird markings. I think the kit is a re-box of H’gawa’s.

Use your airbrush…once you go that way you’ll never go back…and blue is a darker color…easier deal for you by far…
Follow the blue angel tradition and be daring…

Eddie,

You can do it. The most important thing for good spray results is multiple light coats. Wait about a half an hour between coats. And definitely use oil based enamels. Each successive coat will melt into the previous, and slowly build up a nice, solid, smooth, and glossy finish. Go for it !!! Good luck!

Eddie,
Whoa…building something OOB??? I can’t cope…
Mate, get out that airbrush and experiment…before you attack the Scooter, grab some empty soft drink cans and experiment on them with air pressures, airbrush settings and paint viscosity…try to get to know your airbrush before you throw any paint on the Scooter.
Man, once you do this you’ll wonder how you could have ever lived without an airbrush before.
Do yourself a favor…get a compressor (with a holding tank), water trap, and a regulator - forget those carbon dioxide propellant cans…they’re expensive and don’t last as long as you need them to…a good compressor setup will last for decades (hopefully)…Sears and auto spares shops usually have good deals on them.
Good luck mate.

My, how time flies.[:D] One photo to show that I have actually started this bird, since I didn’t have proof and no probably believes I can do an OOB.[swg] I’ve done a Scooter before, so this is old hat. I’m trying not to screw this up so I can have real nice finish. One photo that I use for inspiration that was taken by my Uncle in 83 at an airshow we went to in Arizona

Everyone has to break out of the mold and do something different occassionally. Keep us posted on the progress.

Looking good so far. That’s a rebox of the Hasegawa kit & is a pretty easy OOTB build. Keep us posted on progress.

Regards, Rick

This is the Hasagawa that I did a few years ago. Thank goodness that I forgot to put the ejection handle(upper) in it or I wouldn’t have one for my Blue Angel. I lost it before I could install it.[B)][:I] I’m glad for spare parts boxes.[:D]
Eddie

I’m looking at the 1/32 version, maybe I’ll start tonight.

hey eddie how well did you do on the Scooters office did you use the decals or did you paint the panel?

On my CV-43 Scooter, I dry brushed. It looks good, but it’s dark in there[B)]. This time I used the decal so it will be noticible with the canopy closed.[:)]
Eddie

Wings went on today. That shape…those lines.[^] I really like the Scooter.[^][:D]
Eddie

I have that kit on my bench right now. I used Model laster Blue Angel Blue oil base through an airbrush and what a finish! I them used houshold aluminum foil and Microscale’s foil adhesive for the wings and intakes. There will be some touch up with the yellow areas but the Model Master Blue Angel Yellow is a very close match. I also have the 1/32 Hasegawa kit and the decals suck! They are too thin and they turn a greenish hue after application.

Looking forward to seeing this one finished. I had this kit a couple of months ago, had to set it down in a hurry and put it on a chair and a buffalo sat on it, well actually my dad did, but close enough.

Hey Eddie,
You’ve read my mind. For the longest time I wanted to do a Scooter in the Blues scheme and I think I may have to do one now. Thanks a lot …!!![;)]
So what show season are you to do??. For me I am going to do the 85 season. I was at the Air Show when Gershon and Caputi collided killing Gershon…
Anywho as fer the colour, I would say by seeing them and looking at some pix, they were a lil darker shade of B.A blue…
I am definitley looking forward to this build then again after watching VH’s video, “Dreams” all the more I am in the mood.
Looking forward to seeing your build Ed…

Sorry bout that, I’ll be doing Gershon’s Scooter…

I’ve got that crash on video. Very sad.[:(] I’m probably going with whatever’s on the decal sheet. My main motivation is a good finish with this one[^] Since were on the subject, have you ever seen the film,“Threshold: The Blue Angel Experience”? The tape is from one of the seasons in F-4s.I’ve got it and it’s INCREDIBLE![8D][^]
Eddie

well I have one too and i will try to get a pic of the office ASAP. BTW it will be easy since the canopy isn’t on and the throne isn’t installed yet. and also I did the impossibe and painted the artificial horizon.

ok here are the pics
