Hey Ed,
I have not yet seen that video with their Phantoms… I have photos of the crash before and after and I think I may have it on video as well. As you mentioned very sad indeed.
As you mentioned about the finish, that is the only part of the build that I am kinda nervous about.
Just wondering with such a high finish, how will you obtain it if you do not mind me asking?? TIA…!!
Flaps up, Mike
Looks good! I love A-4’s, I think I’ll build another one soon. Thanks for sharing, keep us updated with your progress.
Darren.

Those are outstanding pix![:D][8D] What are you using, a microscope?[(-D] You did put fiber optics in there to illuminate your fine work, right?[;)]
I know that those bird are very clean, for those of you that have done the Blue Angels, do you do any highligting in the wheel wells? I was thinking of using a light grey wash to get some of the details to stand out.
Butz,
To accomplish my finish , I’m gonna run home to mama and use a rattle can for paint and glosscoat. I’ll use my airbrush on a less demanding model, like one of my hybrids.[:p] I like you’re saying of Flaps up. I also like kick the tires, light the fires,
Eddie
well of course the rest of the aircraft is sparkling clean do you know how many guys they use to clean it 1000 ( they have to have that many so they can spit on it so it will shine[:D]) But the wheel wells probably could use a good wash with a dark color because wheel wells are generally not clean anyways.
Hey Ed,
So your goona use the ol spray can method… Now theres a thought!!
Its rare for me to do a shiny bird so this B.A will definitly be a challenge with my AB, buffing and polishing skills.
As to “Flaps up”, one of my cousins who flies 16s always signs off in that fashion when he either writes or emails me… Glad you liked it[;)] its different thats for sure.

Well, for those of you who don’t think I can build a “real” model anymore[(-D][swg], I have made another step forward on this bird, although I’m not too sure if I’m happy with the shade of blue I used. The MM Blue Angel blue just didn’t look right to me, so instead of jumping to my old stand by ,royal blue, I tried Testors dk. blue,1211. It kinda looks like this Bearcat B.A., IMO.
This is what my Scooter looks like now.
Maybe I should wait to see what it looks like in the sun before I switch colors. Tell me what you think. One thing this color may do is contrast the decals better than the darker color. It’s always something, I tell ya.[B)][:D]
Eddie
Eddie,
That’s a tough one - all of the pics I’ve seen of the Blue Angels A-4’s do show a visibly darker shade of blue than the blue we see in the photo you posted…but with the vagaries of lighting, composition, color scales etc etc…it’s really hard to say if what WE see is too light or not.
I’m sure there’s a FS number for the correct shade of blue - maybe someone else could help out with that one -
Anyway - looks good so far - when you get the color issue sorted, post more pics - I love the A-4.
Try The Model Master enamel, FS15050- Blue Angel Blue. I used it on a Blue Angel F-18 model, and it’s dead on IMHO. The only thing I did to get the color just right was to add a drop of gloss black. I regret that I can’t provide a pic, I sold the 1/72nd scale model to a Blue Angel pilot after an airshow.

I have that paint and it just doesn’t look right for this aircraft. I will use your idea with the the drop of black paint on the B.A. F-4 I’m planning on doing. I’ve got an itch to do one after seeing this photo sim that a man brought to the Wings Over Houston Airshow.
Here’s the new paint job after I travelled from my one horse town 15 miles to get a can of generic Walmart royal blue paint. I’ve learned to do with what I can find for some things as it’s 45 mins to one LHS and 1 hours to another.[B)][:)] Anyways, this paint looks a whole lot closer to what I want than before. Thanks for the advice gentleman.[:D]
Eddie
That looks good. Here is my R-M Pro Modeler Blue Angel;
I used the MM Blue Angel Blue oil based paint.
Now thats looks dead on, very nice. Are you worried at all with paint build up after a secound coat with a spray bomb? Very exited to see how this puppy turns out, keep the in-progress shots coming!
Go for it Eddie…use that airbrush.
I just used silver paint for the LE’s on mine.
My scooters…
Can’t wait to see yours pal.
Plasticmod992,
Using the old rattle can is a double edge sword. It’s not too harsh on details(I’ve had lots of time to get good with those things[;)]) but it also hides some of the minor flaws in the sanding.[B)] It doesn’t look too shabby right now.
Thanks to everyone for sharing their Scooters! I can never get enough of those birds.[8D]
Eddie
Another good “Blues” video is “Around the World at the Speed of Sound.” Like “Threshold,” but F/A-18s, and hosted by Dennis Quaid instead of Leslie Neilson. They even go to Russia and exchange flights with Russian pilots!

I’ve got that one too.[:D] I like when the Russians are taking a spin in the Hornet . They would say," Me fly, Me fly" and take the controls. Very cool video.[8D]
Eddie
Mine is done with the airbrush. I only did 2 coats. All of the silver areas are foil. Just can’t beat the look of real aluminum foil!
One other thing. Did those of you who built one of these find that the decals were thick enough as to “block” out the under lying blue? I learned from FSM that one could double up on the decals to really make them stand out. I wish I would have known that 18 yrs ago when I built my B.A. F/A-18.[B)] I guess I’ll have to do another one.[:D][^]
Eddie
The decals were not bad. Plenty of pigment to block out the blue. The Hasegawa 1/32 are total crap!
Another step forward. She’s up on her stems today.[party][tup][:D]
Eddie
Dayumn! WHEREZ mah SUNGLASSES??? (blink blink)
[8D] THERE we go…oooooooo SHINY.
