New build started-Revell A6-E TRAM 1/48

After a long hiatus, I finally started another model plane. It’s the Revell A6-E and I’m planning on building it strictly OOB. Well, we’ll see how long that lasts. I do want to try out a few new painting and weathering techniques and maybe even try a new airbrush on this one. So far, I’ve finished the cockpit, landing gear, wheels/tires and gear doors and wells. Here are a few pics of progress thus far:

I’ll post a few more as work progresses. Thanks, Gary

Very nice start!

Looks like a great start to me.

Thank ya stik! I’m looking to make a pretty fair “four-footer” here. I hope it works out![;)]

Gary

Paintwork looks great Gary!! Did you add all the hoses to the gear or is that kit molding?

Thanks Eric! No, the brake lines/hoses are molded, and I still have to paint the curved parts on the lower leg dark gray or black. I’d forgotten to do that when I rushed through the pic.

Thanks Darren! I appreciate the encouragement.

Gary

I like what you’ve done. What squadron markings did you have in mind?

Thanks Glenn! I plan to use the kit decals([^o)]), I hope they still work okay. We’ll see I guess. I’ll use the low-viz scheme of VA-85, BuNo 161685. This plane, operating from the U.S.S. Saratoga, engaged and destroyed two Libyan warships on 24/25 March, 1986, according to the kit instructions. She’ll be totin’ two Harpoon missiles. I got the upper and lower wing sections glued today, but tomorrow I’m painting our master bath so I won’t be working on it as much as I have this past week. Stay tuned. [:D]

Gary

I remember seeing a picture of that a/c sporting ship “kill” markings. Did the sheet provide those?

Yes, it does. The decals have a 1988 date on them. Sure hope I can use them.

Painting and weathering your A-6E = GOOD

Painting and weathering your master bath = BAD

Don’t get the two mixed up!

I can’t wait to see more pics of your Intruder. Keep 'em coming! I really enjoyed it when I built that old Monogram kit. She builds up to a nice big model.

Eric

That’s looking very nice. Great work on the pit.

Gary,

Great looking build so far. How did you get your tires to look much like real rubber? I’ve been using the testers "rubber " colored paint but it’s almost too brown.

John

Eric, that gave me a good laugh. The master bath was already weathered, that’s one reason it needed painting, lol. Last October, we had a new tile shower and floor installed and those tile guys really buggered up the paint-work. We painters are used to all the other sub-contractors messing things up and then saying, “it’s okay, the painters can fix that.” Well I guess.

The ceiling had some stains on it (from incense smoke I think[*-)]) so I gave the whole thing a coat of KILZ stain blocker. Woowee, the fumes are pretty bad in there right now. I’m taking a lunch break and will cut and roll the finish latex next.

Hopefully, I can get some work in on the Intruder this evening. Yeah, that’s a big bird in 1/48, in 1/32 it would be huge!

Gary

Thanks Bish! I really appreciate that.

Gary

Thanks John, so far, so good. I do think I could have removed a little more of the Flory wash on the gear doors before I sealed them, but I’m not re-doing them now. From 3 or 4 feet away, it’ll be okay. It’ll just have to be an extra-dirty bird!

Hey, I’ve used that Testors “rubber” before and yeah, it’s kinda brown. I’ve experimented with several colors and custom mixes, but now I just use Humbrol 32 dark gray enamel. It seems to work alright. It’s good to hear from another modeler that they do look like real rubber tires. That will seal the deal from here on. Thanks brother!

Gary

Nice Work Gary. That cockpit looks fantastic and ditto on the rubber tires. On my tires I hand paint Floquil Grimy Black which is a dark gray enamel. It goes down nice and smooth. I then usually take it a step further and spray dilited Tamiya Buff (XF- 57) on just the tread (business side) to add extra wear. Keep the pics coming…

Joe

Gary, this is great work going on.

That landing gear is just beautiful! Cockpit, too. [Y][Y]
