need help with a wolf in sheepskin

hiya guys. been a bit since i have been on. really busy with work. (yes security guards get busy sometimes eric [;)].) wow! major things have been happening over here. what’s up with that manstein guy? jeez! glad he’s off for awhile, he’d really be cracking at me and my builds, lol. guys sorry i can’t look at any pics right now because i’m at work, (hehe, quiet tigerman), but from reading the posts, i’m sure they are great. jester, can’t wait to get home to check out your pics. anyway, i’m thinking about my next build. since i’m the creative type, i was thinking about the last couple of chapters in the band of brothers series. remember they had some shermans dressed up like tigers? would anyone have any ideas, comments, of info on some of these wolves in sheepskins? any info would be greatly appreciated guys. waiting to get home so i can check out some pics. oh, and any new thoughts on a new GB eric?

Can’t help you on the Shermie. I’ll have to check those episodes out.

So far I’m leaning to my Trumpeter KV-1 and to a Kursk GB. Hasn’t been done to my knowledge, though a Stalingrad one was attempted. Stay tuned.

ok so probably a trumpeter GB or a Kursk (any brand) GB huh? sounds good, keep me informed. more about the shermie, i think its in the last two or three episodes. can’t remember the exact one, but they (506th) are walking down a snow covered road, and some armor and support are passing them up, and one of them is a shermie with what looks like thin armor plate or something on it with a “boxy” shape hiding the curved turret of the sherman, with big rivits on it, at least i think they are trying to imitate, a tiger. hope something comes up. thanks eric

In Band of Brothers, I think that was the Cromwell – the British tank. It appears in a few episodes

are you sure? towards the end? i thought they were american tanks passing them by, and they were talking about them. they also had american GI walking in file with them. i’ll double check tonight when i get the chance. thanks T26. i’ll do better research.

I just scanned through all the winter episodes of Band of Brothers, and I didn’t see anything that would resemble a Sherman with a disguise on it. Are you sure it was one of the Winter episodes? I’ll check the last 2, which took place during the Spring of '45, but no snow on the ground.

Closest thing I could think of off the top of my head was a British Cromwell, which has a turret reminiscent of a Tiger’s with big rivets:

Edit: Looks like T26 has faster fingers than I do. [;)]

Edit #2: Fixed my error in tank names to the proper one, a Cromwell. [B)]

i stand corrected. T26, Glamdring. you guys are on it. but if you just scanned through it, wasn’t that american troops walking with the churchill? i didn’t think that they were british. so yeah, [:I] it was a churchhill. guess it just happened so fast that i thought it was something else. maybe i should switch to the tigers dressing up like the shermans in the bulge. thanks guys

If my memory serves, you may be thinking of the episode “Replacements.” Easy was accompanied by a couple of those tanks during a mission to take some town in Holland during Operation Market Garden. (I think) I know the commander of the group of tanks was a Brit, who may have been in a Sherman, and couldn’t shoot a German tank waiting in ambush. Orders of course said he couldn’t fire until fired upon…

I assumed tanks attached were British, but I may be wrong.

You may be thinking of the Panthers dressed as M-10’s known as the Ersatz.

The Trump GB has been done, so it be a Kursk GB. My KV should qualify, though I don’t know if the markings are 100% accurate. I haven’t decided yet. Stay tuned.

The tanks in Market Garden were definitely British. At least for the Allied side. Although the series had several technical errors, overall it was a great show. British Army XXX corps provided the ground/armored forces (Operation Garden), while 1st Allied Airborne Army provided the Airborne element (Operation Market).

Not churchills, it was a Cromwell in the episode. HTH

I have a photo of one of those, pretty cool stuff. Wasn’t that during the Ardennes?

D’oh! I meant Cromwell but was having a brain fart while typing. How sad, even when I know something I manage to screw it up. [xx(]

Weren’t the “Tigers” built on T-34s, just like, or maybe the same ones from “Private Ryan” and “Kelly’s Heroes”? Or am I confused?

whoa, learning as we go. i never knew any of this stuff. but i would like to do some vehicle in an enemy camo setup. weither it be T-34’s, tigers, shermies. i think it would be interesting to make a build like that

Modified T-34s were used in all of those movies to depict the Tigers.

Combatants since forever have used captured enemy supply and equipment. For tanks, the Germans used the Czech Pz 35s and Pz 38s. Lots of French and British equipment fell into their hands. SOme Polish and Benelux gear. Lots of Soviet tanks. Later, US and Italian stuff too. They tried to disguise some tanks and other AFVs in the Ardennes offensive (Panthers and StuG IIIGs) by the Pz Bde 150.

The Soviets made widespread use of captured German and Axis allied gear.

A repainted captured Panther was used by the UK Coldstream guards or Guards Division. I think a Cdn unit used one too. The only Tiger captured and re-used against German forces was a single one given to French Maquis troops in the blockade of French port garrisons which held out to war’s end. They were given a Panther and a few Mk IVs too I believe.

The US used German support vehicles and some SP Artillery. There’s a photo of an OD colored StuG III. I’m not aware of any main battle tanks being used by Americans – it’d be pretty dangerous if you think about it.

But the use of “trojan horses”, tanks painted to look like enemy armor to deceive – I can only cite the Panthers ans StuGs of PzBde 150.

thanks T26, thats what i’m after. do you think you could steer me in the right direction of where i could find any info, pics and the such of the panthers and stug G’s trying to decieve the allies with misleading tanks? i think that is what i would like to do my next kit of. but i wanted to get my story straight first, then try to find some info to help me in my building process. glad i posted otherwise i would have had a sherman posing as a tiger, lol. thanks for the help guys, and any more help would be thumbs up. Google “panzer brigade 150” or “ersatz Panthers” (DML has had this on their catalogue for a few years – CMK makes a conversion kit for this).

All photo books about the Battle of the Bulge show pictures of them. I’d recommend the Concord books by Zaloga covering that time period.

Here is a link with some pics of the disguised Panthers. These are the ones I was thinking about.
