M1083 Armored Artillery Prime Mover and M777A2 Ukraine

My latest project is an M1083 5 ton truck with an armored cab as an artillery prime mover for an M777A2 155mm Howitzer. It is inspired by (not an exact replica) of the one below in Ukraine.

With the lovely Cheshire Cat grinning face on the front of the cab.

I started with the Trumpeter M1083 standard truck (01007) with a soft cab. I will be swapping out the cab for the left over armored cab from the Trumpeter M142 HIMARS kit that I replaced with a corrected 3D printed cab. I am also swapping out the doors from the Trumpeter Armored Cab M1078 kit (01009) since they have larger windows similar to the ones above.

Here are the cab and doors.

I added interior parts to the doors including the pull handle and handle to open them. I also added the splash guard around the windows.

On the cab interior, I have added the NBC system and a storage box behind the driver and a shelf for a radio behind the passenger. I will be adding a SINCGARS radio, Intercom Control Box, and individual intercom J-Boxes to hook up to. The seats are 3D printed items.

I will also be using a 3D printed instrument panels and other detail items inside.

For the covered cargo bed, I found one on Cults 3D and printed it off. It came in two parts; sides and top. Here it is assembled and filled, before priming. It was pretty easy to work with and, in my opinion, looks pretty good.

I built the frame from the box. I added 3D printed brake cylinders to the front and rear. I also added a 3D printed steering gear box and the connecting arms for it to the wheel. I also made a transmission blank from some odds and ends to fill up the underside of the cab. It isn’t much, but not much can be seen anyways.

I also used the new front and rear bumpers, mudflaps, and some other smaller parts from the Legend LMTV Late Conversion Set (LF1303). The Legend parts go on without any issues.

Here it is with the cargo bed mounted to the frame.

Lastly, here it is mocked up with the cab on as well.

More work to go on it. Interior paint and detailing should be next. After that will be exterior painting. I plan to do it in NATO camo with a green canvas bed cover, as above. I also have a set of Panzer Art Goodyear aggressive tires/wheels for it as well.

It will eventually have a Vargas 3D printed M777 attached to it as well.

More to come later.

I’ll be watching. You’re off to a good start.

Hello Gino!
Another cool project! Are you doing the “grin” too?
Did you hear the Ukrainians reportedly call the M777 “three scythes” or “three axes” after this drink:

Maybe this will also be useful as reference for you:

Good luck with your build and have a nice day

Paweł

Thanks Pawel. Yes, I will be adding the grin. I have a decal set from Kelik that has a similar grin that I will modify and make/add the eyes to.

Looking good! I may have missed it, but what scale is this?

Gary

Thanks Gary. It is 1/35 scale.

I got some paint and details on the cab interior. I painted it overall NATO Green. I used Quinta 3D printed decals for the IP and dash. I also added the SINCGARS radio, J-boxes, Intercom Control box, handsets, speaker box, and an interior light to the front wall. I added all the wiring for the radios as well.

I added a couple backpacks and an AKS-74 as well to give it a little life.

Lastly, here are the insides of the doors.

Next up is some weathering and to close it all up. After that, painting the exterior will start.

Got the camera on my phone fixed as well, so no more cloudiness from a cracked lens.

Glad to hear that. That way we fully benefit from your well detailed work.:+1: I’m really looking forward to watching this progress.

Hello Gino!
I like the looks of that cab interior a lot! Can you tell me what the objects behind the driver are? I mean that big round horizontal thing and the box-like thing above it.
Thanks in advance and good luck with your build, have a nice day
Paweł

Thanks Gents. Glad yo like it.

Pawel, The parts behind the driver are my take on the NBC filtration system. The armored cab has an NBC filtration/overpressure system to keep gas out.

You can see them behind the driver below.

have finished initial assembly, painting, and decals on the truck. I painted it in NATO camo with the green canvas like above.

On the front, I used the Keltek mouth decal from their M142 sheet. I hand painted the cats’ eyes. I also added a Ukraine Army ID number and a slogan that came with some other Ukraine decals. The slogan had a 79 ABN BDE patch on it. I covered it with the 43d Arty BDE patch from the ICM Weapons and Chevrons of Ukraine set. I also added the same slogan w/43d Arty BDE patch on the rear.

The spare on the roof is for the M777A2 howitzer. I got it from Vargas Miniatures for this project.

Some more detail pics of the truck.

I have also started the 3D printed M777A2 by Vargas Miniatures. It is only about 30 parts and goes together well. The detail is amazing. I did break off a couple parts that I had to recreate though. You can see them in white styrene. I also removed the TAD Digital Fire Control system box on top and made a new mount from styrene. Ukraine initially didn’t get M777s with the TAD, which allows you to fire smart munitions such as Excaliber. They have since received them, but I wanted to do it as an early one. I also added rear lights to the howitzer. I will be adding the air hoses and light cable after painting it.

Here it is so far.

More to come later. Thanks for checking it out and commenting.

Very nice job, Gino! That face is really cool looking!

Thanks Pawel and Solomon. It has been fun so far. I had today off to sit here while the tech fixes my A/C. Got some more done on the M777. Moe pics soon.

That’s such a cool build Gino. The tarp on the back looks great, along with the killer camo job. The gun,
