I’ve been given the monogram 1/72 kc-135 (circa 1982) and the color call outs looks wrong. What color were the intakes on this and what was the air frame color?
Do you mean AMT? If so, then if you are going with the camouflaged version, you want FS 36081 for the upper surface and FS 36473 for the undersurface (I believe AMT said to use FS36118 Gunship Gray for the upper surface, which is not correct). For the high-viz scheme, then AMT is correct in saying overall FS16473. As for engine intake color, it varies quite a bit from aircraft to aircraft.
You may want to consult Don Logan’s book The C-135 Family. I don’t have this book yet, but I plan to order it next week. I love Don’s books, since they are always filled with many color photographs. Also, you may find www.airliners.net helpful. The name is misleading…it features many, many, many photos of military aircraft as well as airliners.
No it’s a monogram model. It looks like it’s some sort of pale or very light gray or blue.
Since sending you the e-mail I have found the Three Guys Replicas decal sheet. This includes decals for five units including the airplanes stationed at Pease Air Force Base in New Hampshire. All call for the overall color to be FS 16473 which is Model Master aircraft gray. The anti glare panel for all five is flat black. Intakes color on the NH airplanes is the same color as the exterior.
1/72 KC! I would give the last drop of my beer for a 1/72 KC135. There’s a dio I want to do based on an incedent I witnessed while at GFAFB.
Moon Puppy check ebay I have gotten two KC-135 AMT kits I’m looking to get a R modle next
Took a look, saw a couple that looked like they were in the process of being built, ebay said it’s unassembled, thats why I don’t trust Ebay. I would need one with the earlier style engines also.
Ours at Grissom were the first ones painted with DuPont’s Imron, our Wing Commander liked how his new staff car looked painted with it so he suggested his aircraft get the same treatment. They went from a dark rough light gray color to a shiny light gray. If you’re doing an early A model, you can always do it in NMF with Orange trim.
In the early days 1950-60’s all logistic and training aircraft had red-orange flash paint for visibility.
Nice pic of Upset 09.
Well, I guess the maker of the kit wouldn’t matter.
Can you tell me more info on this kit? Is the boxtop a painting or a photo of the completed model? I didn’t know Monogram made a 1/72 135, but if there is one out there you may have a very valuable and collectable kit!! I’m not a kit collector, so I’m not aware of any “super rare” kits that may be lingering out there. It appears that your kit may be one.
Now’s the time I wish I had that book by Schiffer publishing on Monogram model kits…
A friend of mine is the head of the New Hampshire National Guard. I telephoned him and asked about the current color of the KC-135.
A few moments ago I received a reply from the Air National Guard commander.
“The current military standard specification is FS 36173 also known as Subdued gray.”
I checked the newest Model Master II paint chart.
Model Master calls it Air Mobility Command Gray, their number 2035.
I hope this helps everyone.
I snapped that as it passed by my office window. I stepped outside for these…
It’s call sign that day was something -51 Heavy…shot several approaches at KATW.
Monogram never did a 1/72 KC-135. Revell did one that was about 1/144; that might be the one the OP is talking about.
Monogram did do a small scale kit back in the early sixties that had a KC-135 on a display stand refueling a B-47. I had one of those. As I recall it was part of their ‘49ers’ line (small box scale kits that cost $0.49)

Here’s a link to a site that I find really useful. Mind it’s 4 years old, and a lot of the stuff is/ was even then out of production, but it gives you a good idea of whats available if you want to search for it a little.

What happened at Good Fellow?
I recall a KC10 with a F15 mounted on the probe, pretty neat combo. Don’t recall who made it, I do remember building it though.
I live right by MKE and my grandpa spent 28 years with the 128th. I don’t have any nice pics like that. Keep 'em coming!

Sorry, I was incorrect, it is 1/144 scale.
My brother has had this kit collecting dust in his closet for about 10 years:

I don’t know what he plans on doing with it.
The AMT 1/72nd kit is the one I made many years ago with markings for the New Hampshire Air National Guard. I made it after doing a news media mission with the unit. Last year when the hobby shop in Meuthen, Mass. closed I bought another kit. I need to locate aftermarket engines for it as the ones with the kit are outdated. Does anyone make them?
