Luckily it was a concrete floor. But unfortunately for me, my workbench is one of those woodworking workbenches, with an underneath shelf to put things under the table, and the paint spilt over it. It was made by a wooden/cardboard material, which absorbed the stain.
My dad got mad at me first time it happened. Not only that it was a new jar of paint. Gravity sucks sometimes.
Sorry to hear your dad got mad…be willing to bet he is really glad you are not doing other things. Stains are memories, you can look back and say " hey Dad you remember when I spilled paint all over my desk?"…graduating colledge next week, I cherish that memory dad. Stuff happens, I have been doing this for 40yrs and still go to the store with painted nails. It will be ok, there are worse things you could spill. If dad has an issue then he can talk to me.
Be happy that you are not married and there was a rug on the floor. You would now be in trouble for the next … Oh, take your pick on the number of years.[;)] Ask me how I know.
Welcome to the Club. We are known by lots of names too. Model Nuts, Toy Builders, Wood Hobbyists and Model everything else Builders. If we Didn’t spill at least four Bottles of paint and six bottles of Glue in fifty years we ain’t doin Nuttin!
I still look at the Marbled Table Top and think of what a specific color means! When We moved into a new house years ago( Just when Corian was starting to be used) we had a home office space off the kitchen. I spilled some Purple Floquil on it. The Missus banned me from the kitchen( My shop Area wasn’t finished yet.)
The Corian Was Pearl White! Well, I talked with Customer service ( I actually talked to a Person! ) from the Manufacturer. Mama was out getting her hair and nails done. When He told me what to do I did it. Just got it cleaned up as she was pulling into the driveway!
When she saw the Pearl White Pristine Top she accused me of getting a new one. I showed her a spot of Purple in a spot no one else would think to look. Never heard a peep again! Then This morning Before coming here I spilled coffee all over the kitchen counter in my landlady’s house. Go Figure! She has Natural( Unpainted,Unsealed Cabinet fronts!)
Sorry to hear that happened, but it is pretty much inevitible if you build models as a hobby.
A few things I have seen people do to help prevent it from happening. Take a scrap piece of wood (small piece of 2x4 etc.) and drill a hole through the wood that is just large enough for your paint bottle to slide through. Now if that piece of wood is placed on your bench and the bottle is inserted in the hole it is almost impossible to tip the bottle over. I have also seen people use rolls electrical tape that had a center hole that conveniently fit the paint bottles that they were using. This technique can also be used for bottles of glue which can cause all kinds of unpleasant fun when they are knocked over.
And speaking of accidents with glue it is worth noting that if you place a large enough quantity of CA glue (aka super glue) in direct contact with natural cotton fibers it will generate heat. If there is enough glue and cotton, say almost half a bottle on the leg of a pair of blue jeans it will actually generate enough heat to start smoldering and get very unpleasant very quickly! Please don’t ask how I know this lol.
Hope your paints and glues cooperate in the future and happy modeling.
Depending on the CA, that same thing can happen with paper towels too. When I use Sprue Brothers Insta-Cure super thin CA, I always have a little chunk of paper towel tightly rolled into a wick to draw away any excess CA that inevitably gets on the part I’m gluing. Within a few seconds of wicking up the excess, the paper towel chunk starts rolling smoke.
Your dad must not be a modeler lol. Spills are sometimes unavoidable. I have been modeling since the 1970s and once in a blue moon I goof and spill something. Speaking of which, had a small spill last week when I accidentally knocked over the small plastic bottle of CA accelerator. A well worn bench will have some stains so no worries there and welcome to the elite group of spillers. [proplr]
Tell your dad at least it wasn’t a gallon. I was at work, picked up a fresh tightly closed gallon of laquer paint to throw in the mixer, lost my grip, dropped it, lid blew off, a full gallon of paint all over the floor. Took me a half hour to clean up the mess.
My workshop is tiled with 12 inch square vinyl tiles. They don’t all match- I look for ones on scale. Never paid more than ninety cents a tile so far, but I see inflation coming. They sweep much easier than concrete. I can replace a tile or two easily if I spill paint or otherwise damage a tile.
I cover the top of my bench with contact paper. Glue or paint spills are not a ploblem- when surface gets bad, I rip off the old vinyl and put down new.
Hey when I was a teen I spilt a bottle of blue enamel off my bench on to my bare legs. Took 2 hours of cleaning with thinner soaked rags to clean myself up
There was a red paint splotch on the kitchen table from the time I was 6 until I went off to college Sometimes that newspaper just doesnt cover everything, but I tried
Not quite the same thing, but I remember at work as a teenager in the 70’s, I dropped a water cooler bottle, back then they were glass, you wouldn’t believe how far five gallons of water travels indoors.
