Japanese aircraft group build.

I finally have the interior painted and assembled. For those of you who don’t know, this is the Tamiya J1N1-S Gekko. The aotake coating did not photograph well. It has much more of a mettallic look than it appears. It’s almost like a blu-grn candy coat. There’s a ton of ootb detail, and no PE or resin was neccesary. It took some time, but it was enjoyable to hi-lite all the excellent details in this kit. So far, this has been a typical Tamiya build with no problems. On to the air frame.

Jerry

Jerry, HOLY COW! What a great cockpit. The paint job, weathering, just perfect. I have that kit in my stash, and I’m going to save your pictures as reference!

Well, here’s my finsihed “Nate” in Manchuokuo markings for this GB. A full writeup is at my website http://waihobbies.wkhc.net/Nateki27.html. Criticism is most welcomed.

ok i was proud of the pit in my raiden but now im blown away lol DUDE are you a nurosuergon or something [:O][wow][tup][tup][tup][tup]
BTW waikong that nate’s a beauty great job[;)]

Beautifull Nate Waikong, I’ve never seen those markings before. Paint and weathering looks spot on. Great job and thanks for the compliments on my Irving pit.

Jerry

Thanks Chris…I don’t know…the cockpit is my favorite part of any build and I always seem to spend alot of time on them. Maybe too much, I’m having trouble reading the score on the ballgame now. This Gekko kit detail rivals most resin parts. I was gonna do a Zero for this GB, but once I saw the detail on the Irving, It was a no brainer to switch.
I hope the rest of the build goes as well. [:D]

And no…I’m a guitar player [;)]

Jerry

[:O][wow] Awesome CP Jerry, I can’t wait to see the rest of it!
Waikong, very nice Ki-27 Nate. It is nice to see other paint schemes and markings.

Waikong - beautiful Nate. Great job. Iwill look into your super detail GB.

Chris - Thanks for the nice words. I will check out your mirror-mirror GB.

Jerry - That Gekko is startiing out supurbly. Great detail.

Richard

Wow. The builds are looking great! I can’t wait to get started on mine…gotta finish a couple present ones right now.

Richard. The George looks good. Just because I am again blown away by thought on the size…how big is it? What is the approximate wingspan and front to back (is there a fancy name for that length?) length?

Jerry. The cockpit looks AWESOME! I just stared at it for a minute or two amazed at how well you did and trying to figure out how you made it look so good. What paint did you use for the aotake?

Waikong. The Nate looks good. I really like those markings and think it makes for a very interesting looking plane.

Leon

Thanks Leon - the George is 15 1/2 inches long with a 19 1/2 inch wingspan. I haven’t heard a name for aircraft length other than length.

Richard

Hey Guys, is it too late to join in?

Chris in Japan

Still here guys.

My REX floatplane is in end-stage limbo here waiting for decals.

My originals rotted away in the box years ago, and I have tried several online suppliers with no success in obtaining 1/72 scale hinomarus.

There are several aftermarket decals for larger Japanese bombers and heavy fighters, but they are too large for the REX’s stubby little wings.

I may have to bite the bullet and try to mask and paint the Hinomaru’s myself. (yikes)

Cj95, I usually mask / paint my hinomarus. I wish I had 1/72 scale to send you, but I usually do 1/48. I have tons of those. If you want, if you can give me diameters, I could try to cut them down and send them your way, but if you’re up to it, I would encourage you to try the masking.

I’ve used two methods: 1) take a compass (like you use in a math class) and instead of a pencil attach an x-acto. They even make these new x-actos which are made for cutting curves that would work excellently. or 2) buy at a arts and craft store a circle cutter. I think they are made for scrapbooking, so they tend to cut bigger circles, but you can get ones that go down pretty small.

Other people might have other / better methods, but both have worked for me.

Chris in Japan, I can’t speak with an official voice, but I think it would be great to have you along.

Leon

I think that is the way I’m going to go. I appreciate the offer, but I’m going to try to use whats left of my original decals to create a matte for painting my hinomarus. That way I can get the size right.

RE: Chris in Japan… I’ll second Leon’s motion, but I dont have any authority either.
(maybe if we form a coup…)[;)]
