Hi folks,
Im new here and have apent some time looking over a lot of posts, some new and more old. Am i OK to reply to posts with no replies for a period beyond a few weeksnor so?
Many boards i frequent frown on this and ask that you start a new thread that links to the original?
Ive wnjoyed what i have seen so far and look forward to posting some of my work here and getting involved in discussions etc.
Go ahead and reply to old posts but understand that you may not get a response from the original poster. This forum has been around for 25 years or so, so many of these posts go way back, and members have come and gone.
On the other hand, thereās nothing wrong with starting a new thread, referring to an older one, and carrying on from there. It may be better to go that route in fact.
Most would say donāt make a habit of it. A couple of dozen āzombie threadsā brought to the top and you may find a rabid mob knocking on your front door.
I have been tempted to revive some zombie threads but they are like super mega old (well for me anyway) and sometimes I am like - maybe they shouldnāt be reopened lol
Iād say itās good to take a look at when the original post was posted⦠And the replies⦠And then sometimes it makes sense to reply - like when adding new references to a references thread, like āLoadoutsā or something like that. Then please post!
And then sometimes it doesnāt make sense - like when 20 years ago somebody asked for a kit part⦠Then please leave the zombie alone!
Either way the world will keep on turning, eh?
Have a nice day!
PaweÅ
Some people may think itās ok to post in really old threads. But Iām one of the people that hates gravedigging. Especially if itās been maybe 10 years (or more) since the last post was written in a thread.
I hate to say it, but thereās got to be a limit. I wouldnāt mind seeing the forum rules amended on how far back a person can reply to a thread.
The original poster of a thread may (or may not) be around anymore to view replies. Plus, he or she may have gotten all the information they need already.
Sorry, folks. But those are my opinions and Iām sticking with them.
And P.S. - I hate zombies. In fact, I donāt even watch zombie films. And thereās no such thing as zombies. They donāt exist.
Why? Why is it always bad to resurrect an old post? If itās to say, ānice workā on a years old thread, sure. But if you are adding to the content of the post, or had the same problem as the op and have a follow up for the group, what does it hurt?
And if you answered a old question from an OP that isnāt around anymore, so what? Five years from now someone may have the same question and now itās been answered.
I agree, it depends on context, along with age of the post. If the post is from a year or two ago, there isnāt really a problem with that, chances are the person who posted is still active. If itās from 10+ years ago, it might be unneeded or the person who posted it may no longer be active, but there are worse sins
Nothing wrong with Thread Necromancy if itās still offering solid tips. This thread is so old I could buy it a beer in Australia, and it saved me from making a horrible mistake recently so it kind-of deserved itā¦
Nothing wrong with your opinion, but thereās also nothing wrong with reviving an old thread. May renew interest, or maybe a new topic springs out of it. And just like any topic, feel free to ignore and continue on, sun on your face, wind at your back.
Thanks.
I was only refering to posts around 6 months or less old with no replies for a few weeks after the previous last post.
I understand there is little value in replying to posts older than this so would never do it.
āFeelinā good! Got my face in the wind, baby, baby!ā
Iām pretty sure that is lyrics from a Ted Nugent song from way back. Google search could not confirm. Having said that, it was one mantra, of many, I and my teen friends lived by, back in the day.
As for zombie threadsā¦. I have resurrected a few, but not for poops and giggles. I would have a question about something, so instead of starting a whole new thread, Iād search first. Some results were close to what I was looking for, but not quite. For various reasons. Sometimes, the zombie thread didnāt really answer my question (or perhaps even the OPās question, for that matter). So I resurrected it. Asking a question that pertained to my particular situation.
Another aspect to the validity of resurrecting a zombie thread, IMO, is perhaps technology and/or technique advancements in a certain subject or technique has changed.
I think they serve a purpose. If they donāt, then why not just remove them? Exactly!
