Im new here and a question

Hi folks,
Im new here and have apent some time looking over a lot of posts, some new and more old. Am i OK to reply to posts with no replies for a period beyond a few weeksnor so?
Many boards i frequent frown on this and ask that you start a new thread that links to the original?

Ive wnjoyed what i have seen so far and look forward to posting some of my work here and getting involved in discussions etc.

Cheers.

I think people are fine with replying to old posts, it isn’t that big of a deal

Don’t worry about resurrecting an old post. If anyone complains, it’s amusing to watch!

Go ahead and reply to old posts but understand that you may not get a response from the original poster. This forum has been around for 25 years or so, so many of these posts go way back, and members have come and gone.

On the other hand, there’s nothing wrong with starting a new thread, referring to an older one, and carrying on from there. It may be better to go that route in fact.

Good to have you here! Welcome!

Zombie thread!!! [faints]

Most would say don’t make a habit of it. A couple of dozen ā€œzombie threadsā€ brought to the top and you may find a rabid mob knocking on your front door.

Tempting … [rubs hands together] So tempting …

I have been tempted to revive some zombie threads but they are like super mega old (well for me anyway) and sometimes I am like - maybe they shouldn’t be reopened lol

I’d say it’s good to take a look at when the original post was posted… And the replies… And then sometimes it makes sense to reply - like when adding new references to a references thread, like ā€œLoadoutsā€ or something like that. Then please post!
And then sometimes it doesn’t make sense - like when 20 years ago somebody asked for a kit part… Then please leave the zombie alone!
Either way the world will keep on turning, eh?
Have a nice day!

Some people may think it’s ok to post in really old threads. But I’m one of the people that hates gravedigging. Especially if it’s been maybe 10 years (or more) since the last post was written in a thread.
I hate to say it, but there’s got to be a limit. I wouldn’t mind seeing the forum rules amended on how far back a person can reply to a thread.
The original poster of a thread may (or may not) be around anymore to view replies. Plus, he or she may have gotten all the information they need already.

Sorry, folks. But those are my opinions and I’m sticking with them.

And P.S. - I hate zombies. In fact, I don’t even watch zombie films. And there’s no such thing as zombies. They don’t exist.

Why? Why is it always bad to resurrect an old post? If it’s to say, ā€œnice workā€ on a years old thread, sure. But if you are adding to the content of the post, or had the same problem as the op and have a follow up for the group, what does it hurt?

And if you answered a old question from an OP that isn’t around anymore, so what? Five years from now someone may have the same question and now it’s been answered.

I agree, it depends on context, along with age of the post. If the post is from a year or two ago, there isn’t really a problem with that, chances are the person who posted is still active. If it’s from 10+ years ago, it might be unneeded or the person who posted it may no longer be active, but there are worse sins

That’s for dang sure.

Nothing wrong with Thread Necromancy if it’s still offering solid tips. This thread is so old I could buy it a beer in Australia, and it saved me from making a horrible mistake recently so it kind-of deserved it…

Nothing wrong with your opinion, but there’s also nothing wrong with reviving an old thread. May renew interest, or maybe a new topic springs out of it. And just like any topic, feel free to ignore and continue on, sun on your face, wind at your back.

Thanks.
I was only refering to posts around 6 months or less old with no replies for a few weeks after the previous last post.
I understand there is little value in replying to posts older than this so would never do it.

With mention of resurrection, zombies and necromancy, I’m thinking this thread is taking on a ghoulish cast.

Maybe someone could put a DNR rule together to explain when it’s appropriate to let old threads die?

That would fall to me, and I’ve got nothing against the walking dead. :man_zombie:

You’re welcome, and thanks for asking! Good question.

ā€œFeelin’ good! Got my face in the wind, baby, baby!ā€
I’m pretty sure that is lyrics from a Ted Nugent song from way back. Google search could not confirm. Having said that, it was one mantra, of many, I and my teen friends lived by, back in the day.

As for zombie threads…. I have resurrected a few, but not for poops and giggles. I would have a question about something, so instead of starting a whole new thread, I’d search first. Some results were close to what I was looking for, but not quite. For various reasons. Sometimes, the zombie thread didn’t really answer my question (or perhaps even the OP’s question, for that matter). So I resurrected it. Asking a question that pertained to my particular situation.
Another aspect to the validity of resurrecting a zombie thread, IMO, is perhaps technology and/or technique advancements in a certain subject or technique has changed.

I think they serve a purpose. If they don’t, then why not just remove them? Exactly!

Cheers,
Mark
