So here’s what I did during my holidays. This is the Academy 1/35 IDF M51 Super Sherman. I made it OOB. Two major problems with this kit: first is the molded on texture which is awefull must be sanded down cause it simply doesn’t look realistic IMHO. But I haven’T been able to sand it all down and you can still see some of it on the front hull. Second is the fit of the mantlet cover … it simply doesn’t fit. I simply glued both parts together and I used putty to reshape it.
Overall, that was a fun build and I like the results.
Yann, that’s a nice looking OOB build! I’m not an expert on Shermans and know very little about IDF armor, but I think the cast texture looks pretty good. Keep up the good work![tup]
Looks pretty good. You did a nice job on it. The cast texture is correct, the hulls and turrets were pretty rough on them. It looks like you left the elongated circular vision blocks around the commander’s cupola unpainted. They should be a solid, gloss dark green or gloss black color. They are clear “windows” that the commander used to see out of when buttoned up. It also looks like you left the headlights unpainted as well. Good job on the color and weathering. It definitely looks like an IDS Super Sherman.
Woah, nicely done! You got just the right amount of stowage, without looking cluttered, and you weathered it so it looks very worn, yet not dirty or mud covered! Something I strive for yet never seem to achieve. The springs in the second to last picture add an amazngi touch of detail!
You are damn right Gino. I always forget those headlights. And concerning these windows … well shame on me I didn’t make the research properly as I tought they were like any other periscopes.
Looks really fine. The finish is perfect and everything, other than the glitches mentioned, appears to be right in place. I especially like the (3 & 4) texture in the armor. The last two views are the best. I have one put back that’ll I’ll get around to some day.
Very nice buid there Yann. I have the same kit sitting in my build queue and know what you mean about the casting texture. At least from the photos, it looks to me like you’ve fixed the texture pretty well. I do like the weathering and the little dings and whatnot on the road wheels. Aside from Gino’s comments, the only thing that might jump out at me is that the packs and tarps on the deck seem like they should be tied down. I’m not an IDF and/or M51 expert so that comment comes from observations of M4’s in WWII.
All in all, a first rate build of the ultimate Sherman[tup][tup]!
Just noticed one other small thing. The tail lights are upside down. The oval lense should be at the top. Also, only the top left should be red, with the other 3 (right oval and both slits) should be black. Hope that helps some more.
nice work yann!![tup][tup]-- i read the whole thread so i guess there are a couple very minor glitches-- i know you will fix them up perfectly— i think the coloring and weathering on this build is top notch!![^]-- nice work man[:D]-- tread[:P]
Amazing! Do you (or anyone else) know if that is the steel track variation? I am getting ready to build a sherman (M4A1) and can’t figure out exactly how to paint that track in terms of it being steel or rubber treads. How did you do it?
