For those who display your models on a regular brown bookcase/shelf, the following may give you an idea to make your shelves a bit more “eye-catching” so to speak.
I found the pic long ago on the Net.
For aircraft, you could decorate the shelf as an airfield tarmac, or a runway, or even a ship flight deck.
For cars, you could decorate the shelf as a parking lot or even a street.
For other models, you’re only limited by your imagination.

Great idea, certainly would help with using some scrap timber rather spend money on something more appealing noting the cost of timber these days !

Brilliant idea! I will be doing that.
I use clear display cases. I have both sizes of the AMT cases and Hobby Lobby has one that works great for 1/25 scale trucks.

Those are some killer builds!!. I really like the acrylic cases. Every so often, I have to pull out a makeup brush and a can of compressed air to clean off my dusty models.

I bought this cabinet at a prison industries sale in Maine a few years back. Added the glass shelving and painted it white and put a mirror in the back. I like the way it came out.

I took a pair of the old Ikea Detolf display cases and merged them using a new top and base. I also used another mod to double the number of shelves.
As I mostly build 1/32 aircraft, this has run out of space already and I picked up an Ikea Kallax with their glass door option. This fits most WWII single seater 1/32 aircraft.

Here’s how I currently display mine. An IKEA cabinet tucked into the corner of my old modeling area - below the coffee pot and TV on the shelf above. Not ideal by any means, it’ll do for now. My current thing is “modern” jets (whatever that means) so that’s primarily what’s on the shelves. There are lots more models boxed up in the garage. There should be just enough room on the top shelf to squeeze in the Harrier I’m working on.

The acrylic cases were a lot cheaper prior to the tariffs that were imposed on imports.

That is cool! Really like the ability to switch out the kits.
I like to hang mine in flight. Just starting and using my son’s old room (now grandson’s). Grandson is only four but gives me sh#@ when they don’t have pilots. Wish more kits came with them!

Well, I finally decided it was time to do something about my display situation.
Until a couple of days ago, the space in the first photo was occupied by a shelving unit containing most of my stash. The rest of the room had also slowly accumulated boxes, supplies and all the other stuff that seems to multiply when you’re not paying attention. I really wish I’d taken a picture immediately before I started cleaning everything up, because the transformation would have been a lot more dramatic.
Meanwhile, the three aircraft I’ve actually finished since getting back into modeling were sitting on the windowsill in front of my desk. There wasn’t room for another one, and it was starting to look pretty cluttered anyway, so I decided it was finally time to give the finished models a proper home.
The stash has now been relocated into the closet, which freed up that entire wall for a new glass display cabinet.
Here’s what the room looks like now. The stash is in the closet, the finished models are in the cabinet, and the workbench is right next to it.
It’s probably a little optimistic considering that I’ve only completed three aircraft since getting back into modeling about a year and a half ago, plus one F-4 Phantom you can see on the bench that will hopefully find its place in the cabinet by the weekend. 
But at least I’ve got plenty of room to grow.
I really like having the finished models out where I can actually see them, and the lighting makes a huge difference.
The longer-term plan is to put a second identical cabinet right next to this one. There’s exactly enough room on that wall for two of them side by side. So as I slowly whittle down the stash in the closet, the idea is that the display cases will gradually fill up.
Although judging by the size of the stash and my current completion rate, filling two of these cabinets may be more of a long-term goal than I realized.

That’s a really nice looking cabinet. Where did you get it? One thing I’ll mention is that if you are planning to get a second matching one, you might not want to wait. Products tend to go out of production (just like models) just before you decide you need it, making it next to impossible to find a match. Just don’t ask me how many home reno projects needed just one more tile or handle, etc. Unless it’s a very common / popular item, I would probably get a second one soon.

Thank you! I studied these for quite some time before I landed on that one. I really like it. It took a bit to assemble, felt like it’s own model kit but it really looks great I think.
As I was assembling this last night, I had exactly the same thought. I probably should just order another one now and keep it in the garage until I’m ready for it. That way I know I’ll have an exact match instead of discovering two years from now that they don’t make this one anymore.

It looks like the price has gone up quite a bit since I bought mine a couple weeks ago. I paid around $199, so it must have been on sale at the time.

It’ll hold about 15 to 17 1/48 scale aircraft so at my glacial build pace, I’ve got quite a long time before I fill it up. That said, as you said, once I do fill it up, getting them to match might be impossible.
