I just got into this hobby a year ago, ever since I started to deepen my interest in military history. Surprisingly my boomer dad was never into modeling, but he supported me in my hobby and bought me my first kit (an I-15 Chaika) for the holidays. I am currently building a Soviet ground crew and pilots kit for my plane, and it is very fun but also quite difficult at times! I hand-paint all of my models, and have only used ICM kits so far (I love ICM, the detail is amazing). I love modeling because it is an opportunity to combine my art skills with my militaria collecting addiction. I’m looking forward to being a part of this community!

Hello and welcome to FSM
We started at the same place, I see. Welcome! What kind of militaria do you focus on?
Welcome to the forum Comrade Shmersky! I’m calling myself a sophomore modeler. As others have said, you are most welcome here and there is no such thing as a stupid question. That’s been my experience.
Cheers,
Mark
Welcome!
In this hobby sometimes it’s the challenge that makes it fun!
Welcome to the community and welcome to the hobby.
I did my first ICM kit recently and I will agree. Great kits.
I collect WWI and Cold War stuff (as well as having a pretty decent challenge coins collection). I would love to find more WWII stuff but it is so hard to come by. What about you
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
Thanks! I feel spoiled with all of the detail of ICM… what are some other good manufacturers you’d recommend? I am planning on buying my first Revell kit soon.
Welcome to the forum! You’ll find that it’s a great community, a great source of inspiration, and a great source of knowledge. Looking forward to seeing your builds!
I haven’t “collected” anything new in several years now, but I have a bin stored away of WWII items out of Finland. For example, this “puukko” knife, in the trench art style. During the long trench warfare period of 1942-43, a lot of soldiers used their down time to make trinkets, and downed Soviet aircraft parts were a common material. Hence the aluminum and plexiglass used here.
A second data point, @Toimi_Tom. First “action” in your name, and now a Finnish trench knife. Oletko salaa suomalainen?
Ha, no secret, just an American of Finnish heritage. My ancestors came over at the turn of the century and settled in Toimi, Minn., where we are lucky to still have a family homestead cabin. I studied Russia and Finland’s wars in college and my collecting and modeling have centered on that conflict.
Very cool! :0
I currently do not have any weapons, but I have a WWI German Iron Cross, as well as a pickelhaube which I inherited (might post pictures later). Most of my collection is coins/medals/photos and random trinkets since I do not have too much space.
