Are we obsessed with tanks or what? How about a group build for a towed gun plus vehicular transport? I like the open-ended group builds you see on some of the other forums, so the actual gun and transport do not need to be specified. This could be fun as it would be open to all – theoretically, even medieval cannons and horse teams!
So you might do an 88 with SdKfz 7, a Russian Tractor pulling one of those huge 210’s, an American Long Tom pulled by a truck or a tractor in 'Nam, a German infantry gun pulled by horses, a Gulf War/Iraq War project …
Half the fun, IMO, would be seeing what people come up with. And it would generate lots of interesting research on what vehicles were used to tow what guns. As long as the gun is towed, and it’s got its transport too, it’s fair game. (Tanks towing guns would clearly be cheating! [(-D])
It could start, maybe, April 1 (no joke intended), and end July 1. A break from individual track links! (Although some transports might still have those.) No zimmerit!
Couldnt you say a tank is a towing vehicle with the turret doing the pulling? But seriously sounds like a great detailing project to do Ill have to look into it.
Towed guns have been a big part of military power for centuries, and heck they still are today. I think it would be fun. Superdetailing is definitely an option on a towed gun, with all the guts open to view like that.
Larry: that sounds fun … I proposed a SPA group build a bit back , with all these kits from dragon coming out now but a cannon sounds cool too , so when you decide , i will be there ![8D]
The Tamiya Quad Gun Tractor and 17-pounder would make an excellent project. Relatively inexpensive, with pretty good detail right out of the box, and it’s an easy build, even for the less-experienced.
True, and there are also lots of superdetailing opportunities and aftermarket stuff for the fanatics.
Another classic matchup would be the Tamiya SdKfz 7 and their 88. I’d also love to do the Italieri 105mm howitzer. Even better, I think these things were actually towed by 2 1/2 ton trucks rather than tractors (can anyone confirm or refute)?
There’s some interesting Italian and Japanese artillery too – you almost never see that stuff here.
Larry. I’d be in for the Tamiya Krupp Protze and Pak 36 37mm At gun (you did not specify artillery piece only “towed gun”) if that’s okay. April would be good - give me time to finish the current group builds, I hope.
laughing and joking aside (you mean there’s more to life??!!), i’d be interested in this idea too[:)], although yet another group build is going to get me sooooo far behind schedule!!![:(!][:(!][:p]
i have the “classic combo” (sounds like burger fries and a meal doesn’t it?![(-D]) of the 88 and sdkfz7, as well sdkfz 251/1d and the 75mm pak40, and also a sdkfz11/4 nebelkraftwagen[8D] (try saying that when you’re putting an aber clamp together!![B)][:p][(-D]), although i’m still looking for a model of the actual rocket launcher itself…anyone help me here??
looking forward to the start of “something big”…[:)]
regards,
nick
Thanks Larry, now I’ll have to go buy something new. LOL I like the artillery part, but does it have to be towed? That requires building two kits. I have a backlog of tanks to get going. I have my eye on AFV’s new 88mm pak. Might be the time to get one.
Sounds like people want more freedom, and that is a good thing! I guess it should be fine to just let people do what they want – towed gun + transport, or just the towed gun, or the towed gun deployed plus crew. I think SPA or railway guns would detract too much from the theme, and would be great themes in their own right.
I’m glad to see that there’s some interest, and it should be a fairly easy and fun build-up, as a gun can be a lot less of a pain to build than a tank. Most importantly, it would give us an opportuinity to add something to our collection with a little variety to it.
One of those little Dragon 37mm guns could take a night to build. The brand-new, beautiful Barndoor 88 would be cool too. Maybe people will drag their Long Toms out of the basement and try to build them up!
Who do I have to date to have a sticky put up? [:p]
