Your right Bish, a few were being studied for that type mission, and I saw some pictures of the aircraft in the midst of being fit for night fighter service but as you said , don’t recall any ever entering active status.Very few of these beautiful aircraft ever entered active service but what an impression they left on the limited usage they saw.
The second seat area can be used as the radar operators position, but the one I was interested in was the one that had a Blister in that position kind of like the navagators astro dome on a B-29. I’ve seen (rarely) conversions here and there but never wanted one at the time.
Oh well, we’ll see, and although I want to build as close to an actual craft as possible, I feel a bit of artistic variance may be thrown in.(grin)Thanks Bish,
The blister type second seat is fitted to the Dragon kit, which is a B-6. I believe a prototype was on the construction line, but that’s as far as it got. There was a proposed A-6 Nightfigther as well, and I think this has the two stepped cockpits, as on the Trainer. But I don’t think that even got started.
As mentioned, this is the Revell 1/48 kit. It is a re-box of the Monogram kit. Kit’s detail is definitely a little soft. I’ve been spoiled by the Eduard 190 I just finished!
I’ll be doing the single seater version.
Got the bottom half of the wing rescribed and riveted. (Not that you can see it!)
I also didn’t dig the copyright info in the wheel well. Total pain to sand out.
I know I’m not in on this GB but there is an excellent reference for this bird. Its part of the Monogram/ Monarch series. I believe its #2 and it has some EXCELLENT reference materiel on this thing. I have the book in my collection and will be using it while building mine whenever I get around to it.
I think I can spot some of the scribed panel lines, Shep. Nice work! May I ask you how you did that? I have to rescribe some panel lines on a 1/48 Thunderbolt, but whatever I’m doing wrong, it doesn’t seem to work really well…
Nice start shept. You say you are doing the single seat version. Does the kit come with the option of building either version, or do they do a separate kit.
Clemens, that makes of us, I have been putting off re scribing panel lines, but would like to try it.
Schatten: Thanks! I’ve found the scribing tool itself is super important. On this model I’m using the Rb productions Scrib-R. I’m also using the Rivet-R from them as well. I’ve also used the Trumpeter tool, which works ok.
As far as process, first I’ll take some 220 grit and “take the edge off” the panel lines, so to speak. If done right, you still should be able to see where the panel lines were.
Then I’ll take a small metal ruler, and scribe the straight lines with that. I normally do 3 passes. This leaves fine panel lines that also hold up to a bit more sanding. For straight lines that go over a curved surface. I’ll use a razor saw as well, sometimes. The real tricky ones are the curved ones that go over a curved surface. I haven’t found a good way to do those yet.
After all the panel lines have scribed, I’ll take some 800 grit and smooth everything out. Finally, I’ll use the Rivit-R to add in some rivets where necessary.
Any mistakes are corrected with white-out (pen correction fluid). Dries quick and sands well.
might as well join this one too since i already put it down on my GB list and i haven’t done a plane this year. will do the tamiya 1/48 and maybe also the revell as a 2-seater night fighter.
i use adobe photoshop and illustrator to create badges but i’m a technical illustrator with some 3D in real life so they are some of the tools of the trade.
