I have a Tamiya kit as well, mine is the F4U-1A. Basicaly, we need to trim a bit off the end and round off the edges. However, I am still trying to find out exactly how much will need trimming. There is a panel line near the edge of the wingtip that may serve as a cutting guide, but I am not sure if that is the correct place to make the cut.
I have some reference photo’s to study so I will know more when I have a closer look. When I find out for sure, I’ll let you know[;)]

I read somewhere else in the forums that 1/8" needs to be cut off the tips to equal about 6" real scale. Looking at my Tamiya kit, it looks like they need to be cut down to the end of the wingtip nav lights.

I’ve been delving in the vast expanse of my photo albums and came up with these, they were built for the UK IPMS nationals, so I can say with some authority that they are correct. If you take a close look and use the formation lights as a reference, finding the cut line should be easy enough. I am sure I have some drawings somewhere too, I’ll try and dig them out if I can.[;)]

Darren & Frank, I was reading Brett Green’s “Modelling the F4U Corsair” and according to the chapter on modelling the FAA Corsair II, you need to remove the outer the 8 inches of each wingtip. I have no idea what this means in terms of mm on a 1/48 scale model though.
Aside from that I can recommend the MDC Corsair - Fleet Air Arm, II - IV Conversion. This set is for the Tamiya F4U1D Corsair and comes with a propeller, Brewster tank, air scoops, side walls with British radio controls & seat with British harness and all for £6.95.

Thanks for the tip. I was just looking at MDC’s website this afternoon at their F4U conversion. Any idea if they have distributors worldwide, specifically the US?

Frank not that I know of, although you can order from their website and they do ship overseas. You just need to bear in mind that they are a small outfit so delivery can take a couple of weeks. I think from memory it was about three weeks from the time I placed the order to the time it landed on my doorstep and that was shipping UK to Aus.

Last night when I got home I found my 1/72 Special Hobby Sea Fury as well as the last pieces I need for the Seafire, which were an Ultracast Spitfire seat and a Mk.V Rotol Wood prop & long spinner [tup]
The Sea Fury which is not part of this build gets started tonite!

I’ve been looking around for some 1/48 FAA Corsair decals, but am coming up short. The aircraft I am interested in modeling is KD431 of 1835 Sqn in 1945 (subject of the book “the time capsule fighter”), but might be interested in other markings. Any tips would be greatle appreciated!

Frank the only manufacturer that I know of that does a FAA corsair sheet is Techmod. Unfortunately the aircraft you are looking for is not they have provided.

Thanks, those really do help. I am hoping to mask and paint the individual code letters, as they looked to be roughly field applied on the photos. At least this way I wouldn’t have to try and mask the roundels.

On another note, I have just got my hands on a Royal Navy MK.8 Lynx Helo. Its a little 1/72 kit, that I have always wanted to have a crack at as its a nice looking aircraft. So…I will probably add that to the list of FAA projects to be tackled during this GB.
As of April, this will be my order of battle:
1/48 Airfix Hellcat.
1/48 Tamiya Corsair with techmod decals.
1/72 Airfix Lynx Mk.8
If I get all that done before 2008, I’ll dig out my 1/48 Hasegawa F-4…and make a carrier deck for it too. I’ve always wanted to build a RN phantom![:P]

Wow! Sounds ambitious! I can’t wait to see how these come along. As for the roundels, I wouldn’t want to ask you to pay for the shipping on those, and I found that set of FAA Corsair decals from Techmod at an online hobby store I have used before, Meteor Productions. Just out of curiosity, how much would it cost me to have those roundels shipped to me? [:P]
Darren that does sound like an ambitious build list but I do like the sound of it.
I’ve currently got an Italeri Wessex HAS.3 on the go for a build on another site and it’s a great kit but I must admit the Lynx certainly is tempting.

Frank I used Meteor Prod quite often until they put a $US25 minimum on orders which is a complete bummer if you just want a sheet of decals, aside from this they were fine.
