First Annual USAF Vietnam Group Build

Good luck with your project, Rex! Be sure to post some pictures of your progress!

Cheers,

Russ

That’s cool, Ken! It’s a nice addition to your growing F-101 memorabilia collection! [:)].

[Don’t know what happened here - it was a duplicate post of one above]

Hi Everyone,

I meant to mention this as I was aware earlier this week that the anniversary was coming up. But I have been so busy at work (as always) that I forgot.

Two days ago (Thursday) was the 46 year anniversary of the infamous “Tet Offensive”. The very short version follows:

The North Vietnamese military leaders came up with the idea that they could win the war by organizing a mass attack on the entire South Vietnam country at the same time. Their thinking was that they could encourage a mass revolt by the people of South Vietnam to over throw the South Vietnamese government.

In short it failed, actually causing a huge loss to the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces at the time. But this fact was lost in the much publicized conflict here in the United States. The main journalist, Walter Cronkite, reported that the United States was in fact not winning the war. This was when the general United States public began anti war movements and began demanding that the United States withdraw from South Vietnam.

We have met the enemy, and he is us…[blkeye]

Hey, Tim,

Sorry, I missed this reply. Thanks for the link! I might get me one of those bags [:D].

Cheers,

Russ

Hey guys Bit off topic again, but I’ve been working on this for the last few weeks for a friends birthday, almost done! It’s a tamiya mig-15 straight from the box. Beautiful kit, very little modification and very easy to assemble. The decals were made by a different company and were very average, cracked and split so I had to be creative with the ones that survived. Normally have no such issues with tamiya… Great fun though, a pretty easy, fast and fun build.

And now all banged up and munted, weathered a bit/a lot!

Hey, looks really good, Tim! [Y] [Y] Your friend should really appreciate that!

Russ

Very nice job Tim! [Y] [Y] That is most likely how they looked unless they were being showed off at an exhibition.

Ken

Hi, Guys,

I finally overcame my modelus roadblockus condition and started work on the Combat Talon again [proplr] . No pictures yet but making progress on completing the navigator’s position. Then I can start on the pilots’ positions. I really want to get to the Talon compartment but I’m forcing myself to finish the other crew positions first.

Cheers [:D],

Russ

Great to hear Russ! Can’t wait to see it!

Ken

Hi Everyone,

I can’t believe all the great new kits that are coming out! Trumpeter is releasing a new tooled kit of the A-37A and A-37B Dragonfly in 1/48 scale. The A-37A is due to be released this year in June.

Ken

Cool, Ken! I’d love to build some of those larger kits, but I don’t have room for my 1/72 scale kits! How in the world are you guys accommodating kits that are a third larger?

Russ

I intend to suspend them from the ceiling in my “Man Cave” (basement). When I run out of room there, I will have to buy a new house! [:D]

Ken

Hi Everyone (again!)

I just discovered that Trumpeter has also announced for their 2014-2015 product catalogue a 1/32 F-100F!

I better start saving up!

Ken

Hi Everyone!

More great news from another kit manufacturer. Italeri released their 2014 catalog and have a 1/32 F-104 A/C Starfighter listed. I am sure it will be a modification of their previously just released 1/32 F-104 G/S kit.

This looks like it is going to be a good year for new kits!

Ken

Thanks for the info, Ken! It appears the emphasis on new kits is more and more on 1/48 and 1/32 scale. I guess 1/72 scale will go the way of the dodo bird [:D].

Cheers,

Russ

I would not say that Russ. There are a lot of new 1/72 scale kits this year. Just not any from the Vietnam era. There is one I found. There are not any pictures yet (at least none that I found), but Airfix has announced that they will be releasing a 1/72 C-47 A/D Skytrain this year.

Ken

Finally getting to work on my kits for this GB…Took a drill to the O-2 Skymaster to open holes for the windows in the upper wing and the right fuselage. Didn’t go too well, will have to rethink that. Should have taken the “easy route” and just used the dark blue decals instead…will step away from that as I regroup and figure out how to do damage control! I couldn’t believe how small the Skymaster was!

Will probably start on the Skyraider this week, bigger plane and easier to handle. We shall see!
