Finished with Base : Alan 1/35 sIG- 33 Infantry Howitzer 4/18

I’ve been wanting to build an artillery piece for a little while now and when I saw this kit at The Downeastcon show in Maine I figured I’d give it a go. The kit had the Eduard pe set and a Jordi barrel included with it and all for nine bucks! How could I pass that up?

First thing I had to do was clean up the block . This was done using a flat jewelers file. Once all the molding seams were removed I had to add some plastic strip to the inside so the breech block would fit correctly.

The cradle needed a little shaving and sanding to get everything to fit properly but I managed to finally get everything together.

Next up was the wheels and carriage Except for a couple of small sink holes the wheels went together with out any problems. Not so for the carriage! One side was warped and all the guide pins had to be shaved off to get both sides to line up properly.

All the smaller parts had the pe attached and are ready to be added to the carriage. I replaced the handles on the sand spade and the rear of the carriage with ones made from wire.

Next up will be the pioneer tools, aiming poles and all the mounting clamps and brackets on the gun shield.

As always all comments are welcome[t$t]

Steve

Boy, you got my eyes glued to this. I know nothing about this artillery so little information would be great! No question you are going to make few artillery guys very happy when they see this.

I understand that this was the best sig 33 on the block that was available to builders.Except for the new dragon offering, which I havent seen any reviews on yet ,this is a pretty good kit aside from some fit issues and the somewhat chunky parts.Yours seems like it’s coming along fine. Looking forward to the wrap-up.[Y]

Thanks Andy. I know one arty guy thats going to be happy to see me finally getting to one of these. Even if it is German. Right Mike[;)]?(aka Redleg)

Thanks Detailfreak. You are so right about the chunky parts and fit issues[bnghead].

Looks like you are tackling the typical-Alan issues with this one Steve. Can’t beat what you got for the price either, looking forward to seeing this one done for sure. I built essentially the same kit when I did a kit-bash of the Bison 1 before DML released that kit too, it has its challenges but nothing that a little TLC can’t address! [;)]

Bill thanks for looking in. You’re right about the TLC but there’s also been a lot of take two steps back and count to ten[:@].

I remember your Bison build Bill. One of the things I learned from that build and got a kick out of it was the way the Germans stuck the whole gun on top of the Pnzr 1 wheels and all.

Seems like there’s one constant in this hobby, If you scratch- kit bash it they will manufacture it[bnghead]

Very true, it’s the golden rule of model-building! It’s one of the motivations I have to actually get more of the older kits built…that way I don’t end up getting “stuck” with an older kit vs. a newer release item and having to decide whether to keep it or replace it. [:D]

Looks like she is going to turn out to be a fun build. Redleg will be drooling the minute he sees this one. [;)]

Finished up the gun shield along with the pioneer tools and aiming poles.

New handles for the shovel and pick were made by sanding down some tooth picks. Nothing looks like wood better than real wood right? The pe shovel was part of the Eduard set but the pick is from the kit and needed to have the handle cut off and drilled out to except the new handle.

New aiming poles were made from some styrene rod to replace the ones in the kit that were way over sized

The carriage is all together and hopefully I’ll get some paint on this guy over the weekend.

Stay tuned[:D]

Steve

Thanks Brian. Well not all of it’s been fun but I’ve reached the top of the mountain and it’s all down hill from here!

Do’nt know if he’ll be drooling( it is German) but I’m sure he’ll get a kick out of it

Steve,

I’m loving what you’ve done with the pioneer tools. Fantastic! I’ll be following this one.

Cheers

Dave

Nice progress Panzer and a classic looking piece to boot.[Y]

Tony Lee[:)]

Lovely bit of modeling, Interesting piece and your doing it justice. I have learned something from this (toothpicks ) for handles they look superb. There is always something to learn, many thanks. Andy

Nice work on the toothpick handles for sure Steve, definitely look the part. [Y]

Dave,Tony, Andy, Bill thanks guys. I appreciate you looking in and the comments.

The tooth pick idea was something I came up with awhile back when I was building a Tamiya T-34

I broke off the handle while trying to sand off the seam’s. Tried balsa at first but the stuff was to delicate and kept breaking.

Brilliant workmanship.

Fine process…Good luck…

Holy excrement…Steve is finally building a howitzer…ok, its German…but a howitzer…

Now, are you remembering the scent of Wolfs Pu$$y??? Is the Redleg in you coming back???

Nice job on the tools. Good work on the breech…do you have a set of sights??? Does this fit the category of PSGGB!!!

Looking real nice…I see I will have another Ordnance entry come Sept[;)]

Rounds Complete!!

T-man Guney thanks. This thing has had me pulling at my hair a few times [bnghead]and comments like yours and the other guys is what has kept me from shelving it.

Mike about time you dropped by [;)]lol! Thought you’d get a kick out of it. Thanks buddy[:D]

Wolf’s Pu**y! Talk about bringing back memories! Had a CO in Germany that would flip out if he heard anyone use that term. A real ball breaker that one[:@].

Now for a quick update .

Heres a pick of it all together to make sure everything sits right. the gun and wheels are not attached yet to make the painting process a little easier. I added the lanyard using a fine piece of thread that pulled from some surgical gauze.

First was a primer coat of MM Italian drk brown. This really helps in locating any areas that might need a little touch up. Followed by a couple of coats of MM Afrika Dunkl Grau straight from the bottle. I’ll let this sit for a few days before I apply a coat of future and start the washes.

Till next time,

Steve
