Fictional finishes and details - who does them?

We mostly like to model historical accuracy, and of course that’s a good thing. But I got thinking… some planes I imagine a paint finish or particular look, which has nothing to do with history, but I might like to try anyway. Especially when it appears as if it could be historical, but might be quite a radical departure.

I’m not talking about filling in unknown gaps though (we all have to do that periodically). Have any of you made a model with the intention, from the outset, to do quite a radically non-historical finish, which somehow still appears as if it could have been a real thing? I’d love to see any pictures!

Tom

FWIW, historical accuracy doesn’t mean much of anything to me…to each, his own I guess. [;)]
I model to make cool stuff that I like to look at and share with my online and real-life friends.

The Su-33 below has a completely fictional scheme…it’s from the Ace Combat 4 and 6 video game. I personally think it’s quite believable as well as being better-looking than many of the real-life Flanker schemes.

More completion pictures can be found here. I hope this fits with what you’re asking.

I did this F7U as if it made it to the 80’s in two tone gray.

I have done a few “what if” builds. I’ll post a few pics:

This is my rendition of the Kyushu Shinden J7W3, the turbo-jet version of the piston-powered J7W1 that saw brief testing at the end of WWII. My version is a projected variant that would’ve seen service circa 1947, had the war in the Pacific continued. It is the Hasegawa 1/48 kit.

Next up is my Confederate States Air Force Mirage F-1. I envisioned an alternate conclusion to the American Civil War in which the CSA survived and co-existed with the USA right up to the present. This aircraft belongs to the Nathan Bedford Forrest Squadron, primary role anti-ship interdiction. The model is the Italieri 1/48 kit.

I wanted a different look for my Monogram 1/48 RF-101B Voodoo. This is a complete re-imagining of that aircraft in a pseudo-Blackbird finish.

I hope you enjoy these “what if” versions of mine!

Gary

Those are some awesome schemes and pictures Texgunner!

Thanks, as is your Flanker I might add![:D[

Gary

Thanks to Newtothis for this thread! And thanks to everyone who has posted pics so far. There are some very cool fictional builds here.

I especially like the “what if” the CSA still existed. Very interesting. You could do an entire military for the now-nonexistent country. Only your imagination would be the limit. Who’s to say other than yourself which kits you could do with Confederate markings. Are they allies with the USA, Britain, France, Russia…?

Thanks Mike, and you are so right; once you enter the realm of “what if”, anything is possible. I do have plans for other CSAF planes, as well as Republic of Texas aircraft.

Like some other model builders, I am a big fan of Luft 46 aircraft. I try and go for schemes that are realistic, trying to represent how Luftwaffe schemes may have developed.

So far I have completed 3, all in 72nd. The first was Dragon P.1101, for which I went with and NMF finish

Next was an Huma Fw Triebflugel. because the aircraft would have been cancelled in trees I went for a scheme that would aid in that rather than camouflage it in the air.

Finally an MPM Me 262A-2a/U2. Again, it has a wrap around scheme, this time inspired by the idea that it would be used as a low level strike aircraft.

I’m working on a F4U Corsair now that I intend to paint “duck egg blue”. I have a couple others from older days and just am tired of seeing every Corsair in that dark, almost black-looking Navy blue. I’m thinking the duck egg color will simulate a well faded Navy blue.

Thanks for the link to your original post, Tex. Very cool. Too many great ideas for models, not enough time…

I really like those types of builds,as well Bish. That’s why I am anxious to get going on my Komet. The Germans had a lot of interesting airplanes in the works. If Hitler had his head screwed on straight (thankfully he didn’t) who knows how the war could have ended; and what sorts of aircraft would have flown with the swastika on them…

How about these?

USAF F-15SH “Wild Weasel”

USMC AH-64N “Seapache”

USAF F-51M

Hope you enjoy looking at 'em as I did building 'em.

Cheers!

All very nice builds, O! I especially like the F-15. The amount of ordinance on that Eagle is shock-and-awe inspiring!

Oh man Omar! Those are just so cool brother! Thanks for showing them. I do remember the Mustang and thought it was killer then, and now![Y]

Gary

Wow, these are all fantastic! They are exactly what I mean - posing a fictional but plausible model and/or scheme. I will be coming back to this thread for inspiration! Most excellent. Thanks everyone.

Bish, I love that P-1101! That finish rocks dude! Ya got more pics of that plane? I’d love to see them.

Gary

I’ve been thinking of doing a WWII fighter aircraft and slapping Tiger Meet decals on them. Those would be awesome looking.

Gary, thanks. I have 2 more. Unfortunatly I lost 6 years worth of photo’s a couple of months ago, so the only ones I have from before the start of the year are what is on PB. And I go through that once a year and delete old pics, so that means all the build pics are gone from the end of 2012 and back, really gutted.

It was built for the Swing Wing Gb and was my first use of Alclad.

Unfortunately that’s it.

Omar, those builds are stunning. I am sure I have seen the 51 before, but not the other two. Thanks for sharing those.
