“Platoon” (I’ve heard that North Vietnamese generals said this film struck a chord of accuracy to them. I love and hate this brutal movie. To this day, because Tom Beringer is such a damn good actor, I cannot separate him from that character, “Barns”. My stomach turns when I see 'em in any other movie! I want to avenge Elias! Damn!
The Dear Hunter (Be sure to clear three or four days that are needed to recover from this flick. It’s MAJOR-GENERAL powerful, violent and insane!)
Flight of the Intruder (This movie is such a kick in the pants! Luv it!)
Bridges of Toko Ri (Really neat-o film of the ‘forgotten war’ (Korea) and great yarn to enjoy. Plus, this has Grace Kelly in her primo ‘salad’ days. What a looker!)
The Korean War films really bothered me as a kid…all brutal and hopeless seeming. There are a half dozen lower-budget films out there on the subject. No flag waving…just brutal for the times.
Pork Chop Hill with Greg Peck still stands up pretty well though.
Many ‘cold war’ films to discuss…it might take another topic!
As to the Gulf War, American Soldiers is one i have watched more than once, and every time i finish it, i feel exhausted. It is not a long movie and it only portrays one day (based on true events), but the never ending pursuit of the American troops and their struggle to stay ahead of the enemy and stay alive just never seems to end.
The best Korean War movie is The Hunters, made in 1958, with Robert Mitchum, Robert Wagner, Richard Egan, and the beautiful May Britt. Simply awesome scenes of F-86s tangling with MiGs. And who was May Britt maried to? The legendary one and only Sammy Davis, Jr.!
Viet Nam = Green Berets and Flight of the Intruder
Cold War = the 3 S.A.C. movies, Strategic Air Command, Bombers B-52 and A Gathering of Eagles for reasonably serious movies and Dr Strangelove for comedy.
