This part looks like the turret ammo storage rack from the old Tamiya M36 Jackson or M10 Wolverine tank destroyer kits. I will have to check my old kit to see, but I am pretty sure it is.
Now i understand what i’m looking at .Besides what Rob i.d.'ed for you ,some of the other parts look like the halves of an engine block , engine exaust etc . Maybe from a 1/24 or 1/25 th scale auto kit .
In this photo, there’s a 12 cylinder exhaust maniifold from either a Porsche 917 or a Ferrari. Behind it, you can see the cahssi of a 1/24 scale car with dual exhaust.
A guy who worked on this type of special effect models visited our club a few years back. He said what they’d do when they got a commiission would be to head down to the local retailers and pick up dozens of models and cut the parts from the sprues. From there it was use use whatever looked right. It’s a craft that pretty much went belly up withthe advent of computer generated SPFX.
If you’re lookinf to replicate this, you’re going to spend a honking big pile of money top get the parts.
Thanks Shellback and ajlafleche , you both have given me a great starting point. Could you recommend a few kits to begin with. I appreciate the help guys![:D]
I think the cheaper the kits the better . Revell/Monogram has a pretty wide selection of 1/24 and 1/25 th scale auto kits . Try asking the guys over in the Auto forum , they probably have a better idea of what kits would be the best .
That Porsche exhaust appears to be from a 1/12 scale kit. Those sold $50 to 70 new. 1/12 Tamiya on E-bay are in the hundreds of dollars. You are looking for parts from kits that were available 30 years ago. Some of the armor stuff might still be around, Tamiya and Italeri, for current new kit prices, but you really are delving into the collector market to get a lot of spare parts.
Guys thanks for the advice, I will look for some 1/12 kits tonight to see what I find. If you can id any other parts in the pics please do so. I appreciate the help and leads.
Han Solo recommends Champion spark plugs!!! (Grey panel on the red/primered panel)
Another view of a Panther engine deck to the left, and Panther turret to the right.
Thanks guys for all your expertise and wisdom I really appreciate it.
T26E4: I considered buying only only to paint before I paint the 1:1 replica im planning on building.
Phil_H:Thank you for pointing in the right direction I will try to see if I can find a Panther A kit
wbill: I will definitely look up the Elefant kit you suggested
Rob:You are right, I have been trying for a long time to find a group of experts who wouldnt mind helping me id some of the parts. I dont know why guys keep these things such a secret.
It’s not so much they keep it a secret, it’s that they are not building models as most of us do. As I mentioned, based on tyhe model makier who visited the club, they are throwing parts together and pulling out what looks right. They weren’t keepng track that this was part C-23 from Tamiya 35124, but it was a tan thing that would look good filling in that empty spot. And at this point, it’s a 30+ year old project completed on a deadline.
There appears to be a lot of F1 car parts there too - lots of suspension parts, “A-arms” and those flaps (thrust deflectors?) near the engine appear to be rear wings from an F1 car.
