Elefant/Ferdinand Group Build 2/13/05-6/6/05

I now have to do this. I lost C8, then found it again, finally lost it again. It was a miracle I found it the first time. Argh!

well… it’s all back together cept for the tracks and one thing… a front sprocket went missing somewhere after the fall… kinda hard to cover THAT up… still trying to track it down…jeez, this is turning into something interesting… and a small part of my jack is gone too… time to sacrifice sterene to the modeling gods to enlist their help in finding these last two parts…[D)]

Mrs. Tigerman said thanks for the wishes.

I’m behind schedule thanks to business beyond my control today, so maybe I’ll base it Wednesday and camo Thurs. I won’t hold my breath though.

Tankergeoff,
You could always go for anti-tank mine damage, track blown off and front idler sprocket blown off. You might want to remove a front road wheel as it would have been damaged also. Scrunch up the fender on that side and the missing headlight would also be history. You are almost done. Modify the crew members working to remove the damaged parts and you have a recovery/repair scene.

OR let me know what parts you need along with the tracks and you can play maintenance team. You should have the Berge-Elefant there to help![:D]

Anyone doing a Berlin 1945 Elefant? I wonder what the camo pattern was by then? Would the crews have changed the pattern? I wonder what they would have looked like, missing fenders, sheet metal bent or missing zimmerit chipped off by battle damage

I think the Elefant was pretty rare by 45. I have yet to see any pictures dated that late.

Geoff- glad to see it is all coming back together. The carpet monsters must be a bigger kind than we have, if it ate a whole sprocket!! Keep looking, no way that could disappear.

I have neglected my Elefant for a while (too many builds). I plan to get back on it this weekend.

Several of my reference books mention that an Elefant or two were involved in the defense of Berlin, but unfortunatly no photos or details. That would make for a cool build though!

I found this at Achtungpanzer.com regarding the Berlin Elefants
“In April of 1944, part of sPzJagAbt 653 was transferred back to the Eastern Front. In Autumn of 1944, all existing Elephants were grouped into newly created unit - schwere Heeres Panzerjager Kompanie 614, sPzJagAbt 653 was re-equipped with Jagdtigers. sPzJagAbt 614 with some 13-14 vehicles saw service on the Eastern Front as late as early 1945 and eventually all remaining (4?) Elephants saw final service with Kampfgruppe “Ritter” in area of Zossen (south of Berlin) in mid April of 1945. When employed defensively in Italy and Russia, Elephants proved to be formidable opponents. As of January 1st of 1945, there were still 4 Elephants in service of which some took part in the defence of Berlin as part of Kampfgruppe Ritter”

I would guess that the camo of the last 4 would be very similiar to Eastern Front Elefants from 1944.

Thanks for the info JWest, it’s a miracle that 4 of the original 48 Elefants managed to survive that long!

A warning for those building the Dragon Elefant. The decals (at least mine anyway) were very inconsistant. The numbers (332) were very thick but the balkencruz(sp?) were really fragile. I managed to get one to sit down really well on the zimmerit, but the other two crumbled on me a bit. I used a ton of Solva-set to get them to lay down.

Oh joy! Compressor threw a rod.[BH] I still have not started running gear yet. Looks like a good time while I take care of compressor problem. At least I got the wheels and the lower parts painted. Goeff, good luck on that sprocket. Nothing gets me more than to lose a big peice for a while, but I’ve done it.

I think it was the 612 (I think) Schwere Panzerjager Company with the last of the Elefants and the book shows that there were fourteen Elefants left on the books in 1945 up to April '45. Two were captured by the Russians in Berlin near Trinity Church and the rest of the unit was captured by the British. I’ll look it up in the book and post something this weekend.

I have seen pictures of an old WWI British Mother tank sitting in the ruins of Berlin, so if it moved and could shoot it fought in the last battles. Elefants, Tigers, and NachtPanthers OH MY! Maybe that was Brummbar instead?

The travel-lock was a pain-in-the-blank. It didn’t come to great, but oh-well. Daughter sucked up most the day, so I’m set back a day on base-coating.

Here are a few pics of mine from late last year. I intend ot do a few super elephants combing both the trumpter and DML kits. Right now though this is what i have.

You been hiding Crossracer? [;)] Nice looking build there.

Did anyone leave off the stupid hooks for the tow cable on their zimmed tanks? I tweezerpulted one and am about to bag it myself.

Wow I go back to the russian build for a couple days and you guys go amok this is a fast build once you find it good ole fed ex showed today so im going at in earnest now .W hat are you guys using for the putty on the zim I got the big ed photo etch kit so ive got pe zim and will use it but would love to do new tiger 1 by dragon {2 on order} with it besides Im way behind

Hi guys, looks like most of you are doing well with your respective kits. As for me I am getting busier at work everyday that it is keeping me off the work bench. I am expecting myself to have a heavier workload still in the months to come because we are about to start a very large infrastructure project in April.

So it is with sadness that I beg off from this groupbuild. I will be checking this thread every now and then though and I may proceed building my kit later this year.

Thanks guys and BTW, I will be keeping the badge in my site so that you can still use it.

sorry to hear it dwight

as for my status, seems i have found most of my missing parts including my wheels, etc… I may not even need replacement tracks. gonna hunker down tonight and see if I can get it all back together… will update …

JWest21,

It was the 614 Heavy Tank Hunter Company, hey I was sort of close. A report to the Inspector General on 20 April 1945 lists 4 Elefants in action west of Zehrendorf about 40 K south of Berlin. Two of the Elefants were lost due to mechanical problems near Zossen and the last two were captured or destroyed at Karl August Platz in Berlin on 1 May 1945. Most of the 614 supply trains (convoys) escaped and were captured by the British in Kiel in northern Germany
