Dornier Do.X

I’m stalled on the YB-40 build right now - not motivated today. The Macchi M.5 is waiting for some primer to harden up so can’t work on that but I still feel the need to build something so out comes build number three. This is the Matchbox 1/144 Dornier Do.X

A day at the paint shop. Engines and propellers get a base coat of Krylon Gloss Black. Interior of fuselage is all black (let’s face it, you’ll never see detail in there anyway) and the window interior edges are all blackened. I think I’m going to do away with the clear pieces and just make windows from Crystal Clear. I’ll make a cabin floor and aft bulkhead for the flight cabin just to prevent see-through when completed.

So many little propeller blades, each one has to go through a five step paint process before they can be installed.

Matt, that is looking great so far ! As the only civilian aircraft in my stash, I’m looking forward to building this one. My plastic is white tho’ maybe an old one ? Those flimsy little prop blades ! I dont know how I am going to straighten some of 'em without breaking.

Ah, the Dornier Do. X. “The Art of Repetition”. [(-D]

I’ll be watching this one. A kit (vac) exist of this in 1/72 which I’ve been tempted to pick up before, but haven’t. While a unique airplane, the lines don’t really appeal to me all that much. But I digress.

Awesome start!

Great work so far Matt. All those tiny props must hve been a real pain in the backside.

Regards, Rick

My plastic is white also and some of the prop blades were short shot. I had to make a couple new ones - lots of fun there.

Lucien, I was doing a rough measurement to see how this would stack up in 1/48 compared to say a B-17. Came out bigger than the 17.

Rick - you bet!

Looking good matt! You mention a multi step painting process for the props, would you mind sharing that? You mentioned the Krylon black, and I see the red color too. What are the other steps?

Excellent start Matt. Looking like your right on top of it. I personally think this is a cracker of a plane. Im looking forward to seeing your M.5. I loved my build. For a bag of string and struts, it went together better than i thouh it would.

Just think, a Dornier DoX in 1/32…mad? Maybe not, WWW.wingnutwings.com has a Gotha in the same scale. I so want the Gotha LOL. Sorry, off on a tangent.

…Guy

Props to you, Matt! …yeah, yeah, bad pun, I know.

Looking neat so far. Once again, your usual unusual subject!

An impressive build. Looking forward to following this one. In terms of repetition, which is worse engines/props vs Pz IV road wheels?
Cheers
Dave

Frank,

Step 1 prime with Krylon gloss black

Step 2 shoot centers with Alclad Magnesium

Step 3 brush paint props with Testors light tan

Step 4 brush paint props with Burnt Sienna oil paint mixed with Japan Dryer

Step 5 seal with Future

Dave, I’ll take props over road wheels any day.

Other than some rigging construction is complete and she is ready for paint

Everything is primed with Krylon Gloss Black and just needs to harden up a bit

So just how big is the Do.X? Here she is next to a 1/144 DC-3. I would say she is pretty big.

Real pretty, too. The wings and control surfaces make a nice comparison to the Dornier R-Plane flying boats of WWI. Really nice stuff.

My gosh, the art of repetition is an understatement!! Outstanding build, Matt!!! [bow]

Take care,

Frank

This diversion has been completed and now I can return to the YB-40 build. I discarded the kit clear parts for the passenger windows and made all of them from clear parts cement. I built a floor and bulkhead for the flight deck and painted them black to prevent any see-through. Otherwise this is all out of box.

And with the 1/144 DC-3 ‘Gas Light Service’

One last shot

Matt, that is a great looking build.

Did the stand come with the kit?

Karl

Yes, the stand comes with the kit. I painted the letters white then red to make the color visible.

Very nice Matt! I like the subject as well. Great build! [tup]

She’s big enough to make a few birds! Great lookin build!
