Dornier Do 335A-1, Zerstorergeschwader 1 "Wespen" in Russia, 1947 (Tamiya 1/48)

Hello everyone! First time posting a WiP thread here, I tend to advance fast on my models, so any progress I post here may be old news as I go on to the next step of the kit.

My kit of choice today is the legendary Tamiya 1/48 Dornier Do 335. Decals will be from Eagle Editions, set 72-117 for the Bf 110C/D in 1/72. I plan to paint my model as a Wespen fast bomber aircraft (same role as the Bf 110s of that unit). I plan to paint it in RLM 70/71/65 with some yellow bits for the Eastern Front markings (wingtips and fuselage band). Maybe even some white patches for the harsh Russian Winter?

The bombs will come from the kit (central bomb) and from the Me 262A-2a from Tamiya too, including the bomb racks.

The Wasps are cut there just because I test fitted them to the nose of the kit.

Great aircraft and a great kit too. I can’t wait to see your progress on this build.

I’ll try to make a start on it tonight, at least by painting the base colours for the inner structures, landing gear and props.

Always lived this aircraft, will be following along

These are PROPELLERS.

Dear GOD!

There’s more!

NO!

Started my Dornier as I always start my WW2 aircraft, by their propellers. I also painted the smaller parts in RLM 02, 66 and 65, it helps speeding up the end build process. Tomorrow I’ll attempt to start on the cockpit.

Great choice!
I did the old Dragon 1/72 kit a few years back in a similar ‘Luftwaffe 46’ sort of scheme for JG6 - mostly so I could add those catchy ‘Defense of the Reich’ bands. I used the old ZG26 insignia since JG6 had been formed from their remnants, and I figured the ‘Zerstörer’ callback would be perfect for the cannon-armed bomber-hunting version.

That’s a mighty fine looking Dornier! I did the same but for another Tamiya kit, as a JG 1 heavy fighter:

I used an Eagle Cals sheet for the Fw 190A-3 and grabbed the Yellow 5 numbers and insignia.

After eating, I went back to the bench for some more modelling. I was able to assemble the cockpit/bomb roof, wings and stabilizers.

This is going to be cool. I’m not much into whiffers but a good Luft '46 project whiffer is awesome.

I’ve got the trainer version in my stash and am looking forward to seeing this one built @Sturmovik .

@gregbale : How was the Dragon version of this bird to build?

Shall we say ‘challenging.’ Fit wasn’t great, panel lines didn’t always match up, the sort of thing that you’d expect from Revell back in the '60s.
Fortunately, that was when I started modeling, so it was almost nostalgic in a weird way.

You sure got a great mottle pattern on there for just starting out in modeling back then. Good lookin’ Arrow. :+1:

Thanks! The mottle is down to my Badger Anthem - does anything I need it to, and the least-fussy AB I’ve ever used.

I had the trainer too but sold it, trainer aircraft aren’t very interesting to me.

More progress on the 335. I have glued the cockpit/bomb bay into the fuselage and added several small parts. Surprsingly, some gaps were present, so I’ll have to fill the spine and lower sides of the fuselage. I think I had this issue on my past 335 from the brand too.

And with an audible “snap,” the wings are glued to the fuselage, together with the stabilizers. Underwing bomb racks have also been added, another part of my ZG1 fighterbomber.

Bam! It’s alive!

Your Wespen is looking great. Are you going to build the kubelvagen too?

Thanks! I sold the Kubel some days ago to get some of my money back, I don’t build cars so having it would have taken space in the box.

Nice work on a great kit. I love that they include a heavy cylinder to use as a nose weight.

Here is the Do335 I did back in 2018.

I chose a scheme for the Dornier! After heavy snows in the ZG1 base, the staff of the unit decided to camouflage the aircraft in white, preserving the base RLM 81 for the crosses in the wings and fuselage.

You can also see the external bomb racks for the SC250 on the wings. Central bomb bay won’t have the door since the opening mechanism was prone to freezing, so the door and opening systems were removed alltogether. It also saved weight.
