Do-217 M-11 progress report - UPDATED

Okay, I’m back onto this project with a vengeance now and I blame it all on Joe Youngerman. Both engine nacelles are attached and required quite a bit of putty to get them smoothed out. I’ve attached the inner portion of the nose section and am getting ready to attach the outer sections. Note the blue arrow, I have installed several styrene blocks like the one indicated then wrapped the area with a thin strip of plastic to give a good alignment step for the vacuformed front section. I had to do this to compensate for thickness differences in the kit plastic to the conversion plastic and using it to adjust the shape slightly.

nice progress Matt!![tup]

Holy cow Swanny that thing is going to be great! Looks like some awesome detail in there.

Keep those pics coming!

Joe

Thad

Thanks, it’s the 1/48 Pro Modeler with the Koster conversion

One very impressive looking cockpit Swanny.

Keen to see the finished bird.

Looking good Swanny. Great progress. Thanks for sharing.

Regards, Rick

Yeah… it looks very nice… where do you get this kit?.. or maybe is a conversion…

As I mentioned above, it’s the 1/48 Pro Modeler Do-217E5 with the Koster conversion

Progress has been slow but steady. Here are some of the interior pieces that will end up inside the cockpit area. This is the overhead consol, the upper gun turret ring and an interior bulkhead with spare ammo cartridges …

Here the left side panel of the clear vac nose is in place. You can see the center consol in place also.

And here both sides are in place and the putty work has been finished. The gun turret ring is just setting in place right now and will be permanently affixed near the end of the build.

The final nose cone piece will go on later. I still need to install some control consols and the bomb site not to mention build a dual position machine gun for the nose. It’s been four days of modeling to get these two clear vac pieces finally in place - lots of little dabs of superglue, Tenax 7R and putty.

My goal is to get a coat of primer on this by the end of the holiday.

Looking good Swanny…I think you’re in the home stretch! Would you believe I’m thinking of doing another Do 217! This time a 217N-1 converted to J-1 or J-2 in Italian markings!

This would be an easy conversion and no nasty wingtip extensions or large glazing areas to mask!

Joe

Swanny, that 217 is looking really nice.

I can’t wait to see the finished article.

Joe, are you going for the all black Italian machine, or the 3 colour ‘jungle’ scheme, that at least one machine wore following transfer from the Luftwaffe?

Karl

Karl, I’m thinking the “Jungle” scheme…it’s too bizarre to resist! I hope it is authentic though…what have you heard about it?

Joe

Joe, I’ve just checked my sources and the full on ‘jungle’ scheme machine was a factory defence machine for Dornier, complete with codes under the wings. It was a J1. There are no clear indications on the exact colours for this machine, so you could use a little artistic licence on the colours!

I also have a photo and a side profine of a J2 transferred to the Regia Aeronautica in '43 in a 76/02/71 scheme.

I’ll scan them and send them to you.

Karl

your masking ability amazes me matt. A talent I wish I could master.
should be another Swanny Master peice.

It amazes me also. I spent all day Friday just masking the nose cone - man am I glad that is over!

Great work so far Swanny. Keep us posted on progress.
