If nothing is here tomorow Friday (and thus another weekend of nothing) I will stay up and call Squadron via Skype. US → Australia surface is usually quite good. Dad said his Ebay stuff US → Australia takes 2 weeks, 3 at the most by surface.
If it all turns up at the same time… I’ll be screwed as my wife will shoot me.
After I placed the first order… I contacted Squadron as the X-1 I ordered was not the profilipack which the description and review seemed to indicate. They said it couldn’t be changed as it had already been processed and shipped.
The 2nd order had a few things + 2 $5.99 Avros which were 80% off… with their shipping policy of paying the lower of the actual shipping or 30% of the total I basically should get these 2 for < $20 delivered and considering they sell for A$65 each in Australia should be a bargain when/if they arrive.
Hoek’s revenge,
My bad. I thought you were in the states. Not in the land down under[:I] That would be an expensive call & your wife would kill us both!! (You for callin’ & me for suggesting it)[xx(] Hopefully your oders will come in soon & sepearately[:)]
Hi all. I want to know something that I think some of you might know LOL
I am working on the XP-55 as you know and I was thinking. " WHAT IF " that plane was built for the war with Japan, in the 1040’s. What would the color scheme be ? What if any bombs would it carry ? What markings " US " would it have on it.
I am thinking about making this Plane into a REAL WW-2 Aircraft.
That would be cool Bud. If it was early war it definately would have been painted Olive Drab. Later war you have some options, with all bare metal except for markings, or even a mix. I don’t know that much about the XP-55. Was it designed to be an interceptor? Long range escort? Tactical support?
I know for a fact that it wasn’t designed as a shipboard fighter, but if it’s in the Pacific Theater of Operations, how 'bout a classic Tri-color Navy scheme? (Heck, the PB4Y-1s had it, and they were four-engined bombers!)
In 1940’s i agree it would most likely have OD upper and light grey under . I think this plane was designed to be an interceptor but that is true of a lot of WW2 planes that later in the war were used in duel rolls of fighter , strafeing and bombing .
Well Bud, in the 1040s I believe it would’ve been painted as one BigBlack Bird with Air-to-ground rockets. I don’t think there’d be bombs in those days[;)]
‘What-if’ modeling is groovy in that it allows you to play with history, and you can do whatever you want. I think a P-55 in the tri-color Navy scheme would look pretty cool.
However… if your aim is to keep this reasonably authentic, then you’ll want to follow the USAAF route as far as colors and markings go. And that means either OD over Gray or bare metal, depending upon the time frame you’re thinking of representing. If the P-55 had made it into service, it would have most likely been very late in the war and would probably not have been painted, but left in bare metal.
The green and brown scheme as shown on the P-40 above would only have been applied to aircraft that were originally intended for export customers but which were diverted to the Army when the USA entered the war. As fighters go, this means P-39s and P-40s, mostly. So the P-55 would not have carried a two-tone upper scheme. It was also not meant for the Navy and the tri-color scheme on the Hellcat would not be appropriate either… if you’re trying to keep this plausible, that is.
Again, though, you can do whatever you like…
If I were to build a P-55 with ‘what-if’ markings, it would be OD over Gray and carry the white SOPAC/SWPA fighter ID markings on the wings and tail, and might look something like this…
But that’s just me!
By the way, for those who want some more info on the Ascender, take a looksee HERE…
OK I see what your saying BlackWolf, and thanks for the info and the link.
So from what you are saying is that the PX-55 uper half would be OD and the Lower Grey. What kind of Grey ? And from the pic you posted here it looks like the back part is Silver and the leading edge of the wings are some other color. You have any idea what color ?
The camo colors would be OD and Neutral Gray… basically the same colors as in that color shot I have over on the ETO forums.
The tail and leading edges of the wings are meant to be white in that image, although I had a tough time getting them to look bright without blowing out the shadows too much. I see how the tail could be mistaken for silver or aluminum, though.
Anyhoo, here’s an actual example of the white SOPAC/SWPA fighter ID markings…
As you can see, you even have a bit of leeway in applying these markings… the demarcation lines for the white tails are totally different on both aircraft and the wingman’s ship has no white on the leading edges of the wings. These markings could differ not only from ship to ship but from squadron to sguadron and from group to group, as well. So again, you have some leeway if you choose to go with these markings.
I like Blackwolf’s ideas for it. Tri color while it would be cool, it doesnt seem to fit it. But its your build so have fun with it and do what you will. I cant wait to see how this comes out. Good luck with it!
I would like to thank all of you for your help and suport on this build. Even though I have not yet even started it there are 3 pages worth of help and info here, Thank You
I will be doing the OD on top and the N Grey on the bottom with the white on the tail and the leading edge of the wings.
Thanks again and I hope to be able to start this soon as the resin parts come in.
