Painting: When the Rubber meets the Road Wheels
Another small update, with our road wheels getting their rubber coat. Admittedly, I’ve only done the road wheels on the left side. I still have a whole other side to do, but at least you can see where I’m going with it.
Tamiya XF-85 Rubber Black has been applied, thinned at 1:1 with Tamiya X-20A Acrylic Thinner. This thinning ratio is great because it keeps the paint flowable enough for capillary action to suck it tightly against the roadwheel rim but not so thin that it runs away.
While the bottle is quite deceptive with the lid appearing a dark blue, once it goes down on the model we’re getting a very flat dark grey and faithfully replicates look of the highly vulcanised rubber used in this application.
Thankyou @Cbowling! I’ve been enjoying this process of documenting as I go - Very flattered that you feel that advanced builders could benefit, but I’ll settle for beginners learning from my trials and errors and hopefully experiencing fewer errors!
Shoutout to ARS TV plastic model, whose build of this same kit has informed a number of decisions on colours for track and tools. I can only hope mine comes out looking at least half as good as his…
