best way to simulate chipped paint?

Actually, it is for the adults!! Pause to get the kids juice, rewind when one of them starts screaming or record your shows to watch after the kids go to bed. I have mine set up for “Wish List” where it will automatically record anything to do with The Battle of the Bulge without me doing anything (group build motivation).

What this all has to do with paint chips, I just don’t know![#offtopic

well, i dunno… the paint chip thing is for the marder 2 that i’m trying to finish for the old guns GB before jan 1… i just started it this morning at 4:00 a.m.

I actually was making fun of myself for discussing TiVo![;)] 4am??? Now THAT’S Devotion!

Salt new to me,need to try it.I’ve always used a carpenters pencil 'cause of the wider point…worked well on my grey Tiger1.

jason, since my 5-year old has asthma (and bronchitis now to boot!) I have to keep the fumes away from her when she’s sick, so sometimes i’m limited to early morning and late late night…

Jason,

The chipped portions have actually 3 colors (or shades):

  1. regular gun metal
  2. gun metal + pencil lead
  3. gun metal + rust colored paint

Thanks Dwight

Geoff, the fumes are why I switched to acrylic. i was getting dizzy even with a booth and resperator

well, it’s not so much the paint as the glue…

forgive me for sounding dumb here but how does the pencil and gun metal incorporate together?

First I apply gun metal using a very sharp and thin brush to simulate the areas where paint has chipped off. Since gun metal is a bit dark it is a good representation of darkened steel surface. But if that exposed area is rubbed against a hard object like tools it will have some scratches which will have a metallic luster. So to simluate this, I rub pencil lead on the said area.

Hope this clarifies my earlier post.[:)]

okay, i see… i will try this method this time on the marder as the GB ends in 3 weeks… I do this before washing and dry brushing, I assume… [D)]

Yes you can but the luster of the pencil lead will be reduced and you might need to do some touch-ups.

okay… thanks everyone for the help on this. never had a post go so long.

do i win a free model or something?

Has anyone tried the liquid mask and sos pads?

never heard of that one…

I actually saw it in another reference. The writer was building Tamiya’s Challenger 2.

hmm… i’m gonna give the pencil-gm tecnique a shot this time, but if you remember where the thread is, let me know[:)]

It was the July 2003 issue of FSM, page 62.

I’m going to try the salt method for the first time on my Dragon Bergepanzer Tiger (P).[2c]

This may sound stupid, but what about using sugar ?
Technically it should produce the same effect right ?

Ben

I use a piece of sponge that you would use for washing dishes, the ones that jave a green scourer on one side. Works well
