best way to simulate chipped paint?

I use a brand new kitchen scrubbing pad, the kind with a sponge on one part and a course part. I just cut it up into small parts and use it with thinned acrylic paint, not too much on the pad and barely touch the model surface. Practice on an old kit first. The pencil graphite is also very useful.

I still think painted chips are best. You have more control on how and where you place the chips.

Over a washed vehicle, i use the basecolor first, and then paint my chips in oils. After drying i touch up here and there with the basecolor again, creating a 2D effect to them.

The maskoll/ scrubpad works great on large whitewashed areas. The salt is a new way to me, might be worth a try…
