Avro Lancastrian for 'daywalker' ! now finished thank god ![pictures of completed model on the end of the thread.

Hi Frank/guys,

Heres the Avro Lancastrian build i’m using the old Matchbox Lanc’ kit with an M&E resin conversion set, this set is really made for the Airfix Lanc’ kit and people say it can’t be done ! well let me tell it can be mated with the Matchbox kit, with a little force that is !.

The two kits.

As you can see the decals are covered in cracks and when i come to put them in water they will just break up

Wings put together and those ‘tricky’ nacelles fitted a dream, theres a small section on the wing these are terrible to fit neatly.

i can remember this kit when i was a kid you could put it together without painting it because it was made up of three different colours.

The nacelles have flame dampers on them so i’ve had to cut them all off and put a piece of plasti card behind for the exhaust ports to sit on, Lancastrian’s had none on !

Exhaust ports stolen from my revell Lanc’ kit !

Rear wings/stablelizers made up

undercarriage made up, again the legs are very fiddley to align up because you have tiny bits of plastic which goes into a massive hole !! Wheels are wrong but who cares ! it’s modelling and is supposed to be a pleasure lol

Front and rear nose fairings fitted they didn’t need much altering to fit, the bomb bay doors where a nightmare because they where made out of four pieces and didn’t fit.

The side window canopies have massive pieces of plastic around the square windows, i’ve trimmed all this off so when i fit the windows they are nice and neat.

First coat of primer around the tail, all seems nice and level.

thanks for looking

Excellent work Ian!

I am not familiar with the Lancastrian, do you have any other info on the subject?

Well Frank, after the war had finished there was hundreds of Lancasters all lined up every where and they came up with the idea of making a passenger plane !, they ripped out the inside installed new bigger square windows and alot of seats, alot of these where still flying into the middle 50’s

They where also used in the ‘berlin airlift’

The front nose of the bomber lifted up to allow luggauge to be loaded in.

Ian- I am a Matchbox kit fan from way back and build them all the time. I spray decals that look like that with “Testors Dullcoat” from the spray can. Trim them close and let them soak longer and they should work out for you.

Great Project. glad to see it posted.[tup]

Excellent stuff Ian. This will be a different one for sure. Looking forward to the next installment.

As a matter of interest, how many Lancs do you have in your stash? Also would it be asking too much to have a photo of where you keep the completed models. Im sure i speak for loads of us on here, that that would be something to see.

…Guy

Ok Guy i’ll take a photo or two tomorrow keep a watch out on this thread [:D]

I’ve got about 6 more 1/72 Lanc’ kits and 2 1/48 Lanc’ kits and i’ve got around 15 Lanc’s built up

Hi Guy,

As promised heres a few of my lanc’s, the one on the wall is 1/32nd and really haven’t got anywhere else to put it, its wing length is about 38 inches, ! i’ve made five more tamiya 1/48th lanc’s and three 1/72nd but they where for someone else [|(] anyone spot the lone Manchester [|)]

Ian - Terrific collection of Lancasters…[bow] Seeing that many together is breathtaking, Who manufactured the 1/32 giant ? I wouldnt mind adding one of those to the collection myself…

Well sean, I’ve got to come clean the big Lanc’ is actually a paper/card kit [sigh] it was harder than making a plastic kit i’ll tell you,you had to make ribs everywhere, it even has an open bomb bay complete with bombs, cockpit is fully kitted out too. To look at it you would think it was plastic until you tell someone to press the wings, this kit is made in poland and only cost me £16 [tup]

I.D models did a vac form 1/32 Lanc some years ago and are very rare and fetch a fortune on ebay ! i don’t know why its a s[censored]t kit .

Oh ! I’ve also got a 1/48th Avro Lincoln aswell, missed that one

ian.

Super job Ian!!, no matter what its made of…And Sean, come on! Its 1/32…Harv

Thx for posting the pics Ian, Fantastic. I too thought the biggun was plastic. Ive seen some really great paper models built and that sure ranks up there with em.

…Guy

That is some impressive work Ian! Can’t even imagine the 1/32 kit, but I think Sean ought to get one and build it for us. [swg]

Having seen Ian’s collection of Lancasters first hand I can say that those pictures do not do his builds justice. That is the best Bomber collection I have ever seen. I’ve also talked to Doug Feeney who did the ID models 1/32 Lancaster. his theory for those kits is to give the modeler a basic model to work on and to detail as he or she sees fit. The model cuts out the hardest work by giving the basic airframe. I have seen one of these built and I must say the modeller did an astounding job on it. That card Lanc looks like a plastic kit even up close and Ian did a superb job on it.

All the best.

STENDEC

Here is a Trans Canada Airlines example CF-CMW.

I got this photo from the National Archives of Canada a number of years ago.

What does that mean [%-)] ???

Well this is whats been done since the last posting [tup]

Props painted in silver H11 with coal black H85 spinners.

Painting the exhaust was tricky ! they kept going ‘ping’ off the damn pegs lol

Canopy windows glued in and canopy glued, no glue has gone inside thank god !, the part around the side windows where its gone white won’t be seen as its under the framework and the frame will be silver.

A picture to show i do all my modeling on my lap !

Wings on and all nice and level, Starting to put layer of primer on.

Thanks for looking modellers.

Ian- Very nice indeed. [^] Can’t believe you do your modeling on your lap, have you always done it this way?

At any rate, your progress is lightning quick, and looking very good too. [bow]

Looks great so far and a interesting subject.

A mystery story

Wow! what a great projet! are you a Lancaster fan or that is just my idea?? LOL

I think it´s great see the old lanc build as something diferent, and yourse is turning out great! I can´t wait to see it finished.

We (in Argentina) used the Lancaster, Lincoln and Lancastrian too! I have a revell 1/72 new lancaster kit, and my intention was to build it as an Lincoln bomber but after I find out the price of the conversion kit (more that the double of the revell´s kit) I decide to build it as a Lancaster LOL [:D]

best regards and keep us posted
