I built this one in the Mig Killers Group build. It was a little troublesome, and I think it shows. The decals were old and I couldn’t get the missiles to line up in the end. It may never be a show winner, but I like the way it turned out. I won it at the Raffle table of the IPMS show in Perrysburg, Ohio last year. It was an opened box with a nice little bonus of resin Martin-Baker ejection seats. A special thanks to whomever donated it to the raffle.
Chris, that’s s stellar build. DId you enjoy the Tamiya kit? I lovethe Olds Phantom, and have seen the one at the Dayton AFM. Your build is exceptional.
Generall Olds died about the same time finished my last project, so I decided to build this project as his mount. It’s just a little nod to an American Aviation Hero.
I did enjoy the Tamiya kit, but it took some effort. The intakes and the weapons are troublesome. The aft fins of the sidewinders interfere with the bomb fins. The intakes present a big internal seam that’s hard to sand out. The Decals that were supplied with the kit turned out to be trash, but the kit was open when I got it. So, there’s no telling what they went through before I got it. I replaced them with a Fox One set. I have to admit, I did not bother with “No Step” “No Push” and other smaller decals.
I am working on the same kit right now. You are absolutely correct about the decals that come with the kit. I tried to put the first one on for the instrument panel and it shattered into about a thousand pieces. I looked for replacements and had no luck, that is until I read your post. I have a set on the way from Squadron now. Thanks for the information. I hope mine turns out as good as yours did. [tup]
Agreed! Looks like a really nice build! Lotsa excellent details in the cockpit, but i have to say that i am loving the details on the armament. Really sets it off, i think![tup]
I put down the tan first, then I marked the borders for the green colors with pencil. After that it was just freehanding them in with my airbrush. It’s critical to keep the pencil mark thin. Pencil graphite doesn’t seem to get along with acrylic paint.
I think next time, I’ll draw out the camo pattern with pencil right on the bare plastic, and then use Future as my primer. I saw it in FSM on a spitfire.
Great job man, really. I’ve stuck to building tac gray Navy/USMC a/c just because the whole jungle camo, or should I say painting an ‘accurate’ jungle camo scares the $h!t outta me! I’ll stick the link to your build in my favorites and maybe I’ll finally bite the bullet and do a build with a jungle camo. Oh, one other thing, that 53 you’ve got sitting on the bookshelf looks great!
Wow. You did a great job on the kit. Loaded to a max take off weight, ready for action. Just one question, what color is the anti collision light on the vert stab? It should be red tinted glass. It looks clear or silver from the pictures.
